Re: Need help ASAP understanding crab behavior

I was also wondering what your conditions are like, and how long the previous crabs have been 'gone molting'.

Harry - The HCA does NOT recommend separating crabs to molt. They can and should be left in the tank with the other crabs. If all conditions are proper, they can safely molt in there.

Re: More crabs desired

Here is the HCA guide as to how many crabs of what size will fit into a tank of different sizes.

Re: Video cameras?

I just have the $20 one also. I have been using it to keep an eye on the stray cat on our property, which then moved into the crawl space under my husband's office. So that 's why I was wanting to be notified of movement, LOL.

Re: Feliway Plug-ins--Safe?

LOL, definitely a secret hand shake! My previous cat started plucking out his fur after I had to put him in a boarding kennel for 2 weeks. The at the age of 14, he started peeing on the floor if he didn't get what he wanted - like if we didn't let him out, or if his food dish was empty etc. We tried...

Re: Video cameras?

I also got a Wyze cam recently. But I have used it more for keeping track of the stray cat at our property that we trapped and is now living in the crawl space of my husband's office. LOL.
Is there a way to set it so that you get an alert when there is movement in the tank?

Re: Is Dog or Cat Food Okay For Crabs?

Personally, I would not feed it to my crabs based on all the things that are added that I can not pronounce, LOL. I have also read that the way the laws are regarding pet food, not all the ingredients need to be declared on the bag. So there could be other things in the food that you don't even know...

Re: Feliway Plug-ins--Safe?

I don't know if there is an official yes or no. But I know I used them in the house, but not in the same room as the crabs, with no issues.

Re: New and Nervous Owner

Welcome to crabbing! Be sure to read through the information in the care sheets. Tons of great info there. Heat lamps are notorious for zapping humidity. Personally, I have multiple UTH's (one on each side and two on the back of my 55 gallon). You can cover the lid with saran wrap to keep humidity i...

Re: Strawberry shoots in crabitat

Oooo, Motor, I like that idea! I tried to grow some in the tank but Sonny just plowed them over or ripped them out before they got to be much more than a tiny thread. I'm going to try to start them first, then put then in the tank. Thanks!

Re: New and improved crabitat

Have you consider an UTH (under tank heater)? For crabs, they are always mounted on the back or side, just above the substrate line. There are types that can be insulated over as well. They create heat but don't zap humidity.

Re: How to prepare foods?

When my crabs were small, the only way I knew they must be eating was that they were still alive. It seemed like I put in and took out exactly the same amount of food. But they must have eaten something if they didn't die! Now that they are bigger, they make a visible dent in the food amounts!

Oh no I can't believe I had calculated the mixture for 2 quarts! Thanks for warning me! That fixes the problem
No problem! I am glad you asked the question!
