Re: Advice on Australian crabs

@AussieJJDude is our Australian admin! Straws and aussies are the most common crabs in Australia, and aussies tend to need sandier substrate so more sand to coconut fiber ratio.

Pretty much everything else is similar or the same as far as care goes.

Re: Salt water

After doing more research I have found out that the Hermit Crab Salt water mixture I bought isn’t recommended for hermit crabs...go figure [emoji2962][emoji30]. I’d like to purchase the Instant Ocean that everyone talks about but there are so many different kinds and I want to be sure that I buy th...

Re: Can I bleach a tank?

You can use 1 part bleach to 10 parts water and make sure the tank is well rinsed afterwards.

You can also use vinegar and water.

Re: How much substrate?

Hello again! I will be cleaning out my 55 gallon hermit crab tank within the next week but I’m not sure how much sand I should buy. Right now I’m planning on using “quickrete premium play sand” which come in 50 pound bags and I want to provide about 10 inches of substrate. I’ll also be getting the ...

Re: Missing crab

Its been 16 days since I took these crabs in. I still haven't seen the pp since it dug down. I'm starting to have doubts whether I even have a second crab. No fishy smell. I check my wyze regularly, but I haven't seen him yet, just my straw, pebbles, all over the food, darker than ever before. At w...

Re: University Student Looking for Crab Research

Do a search for coenobita on scholar.google.com Some are open access, some are behind pay walls but many universities can get access for students. There have been many controlled experiments on rearing eggs in labs, field studies, and of course detailed descriptions of species including reproductiv...

Any help would be appreciated, including anecdotal accounts! I'm also interested in common behaviors and preferences they exhibit when reproducing like o...

Re: eco earth

When you put a hermie in a fresh, new tank, they do not immediately dig. They check out their new surroundings first. Make sure you have the substrate deep enough for them to dig down and create their tunnels. Some do dig immediately because they haven’t had the opportunity to do so. It’s not uncom...

Re: Built in 5 gallon Marine tank...How to cycle?

Hi there, Im wrapping up my 325 gal setup after some various delays. I have a 5gal tank that will serve as the saltwater pool for the crabs, but I wanted to make it as alive as possible. The whole crabitat is designed to be bioactive. Therefore, i need some advice from salt aquarium savvy people on...

Re: Long List of Hermit Crab Questions

I have a long list of questions and musings that I'd like to share and receive feedback on, but I don't know if it's appropriate to post in this section (if at all). Should I break the questions into shorter topics, or can I post the message as-is? Many of your answers are here in the care guides a...

Re: Amethyst for Decoration?

I wouldn’t put any of my collection in with my crabs, because of the erosion from the sand, and any other damage that can be done to them. Depending on the stone, they can become brittle, crack, or fall apart. I wouldn’t want the crabs picking at or breaking crystal pieces off of my specimens, eithe...

Re: Food From the Ocean

I wouldn’t bring anything from the ocean because you have no way to determine if it’s polluted, whether any parasitic organisms are in the decaying fish/crabs, and putting outside contaminants in the tank can cause issues with bacteria.

Re: Moss pit hiding

Ok should I not spray at all in the tank? I read spraying it with salt water prevents mold? Is it ok to spray other parts of the tank with freshwater to help with humidity (ours stays around 60-70 usually)? Dont use salt water to mist. The water evaporates but the salt never does. Also- there is no...
