Re: reptilebasics UTH

The regulators xeno mentioned are like $20 on Amazon. They are basic with no additional settings like Wodesorel mentioned. It would be nice to have a night mode and some sort of temperature alert. Even though there thermostats measure the temperature we still use an Acurite in each tank as a double ...

Re: reptilebasics UTH

The Reptile Basic Ultratherms only have two prongs. I don't think any UTH heaters have three prong plugs. I am not sure if having three prongs would matter or not. Like plugging a phone charger into a standard wall outlet. I would do some research just to be safe.

Re: Egg crate

It all depends on the size of the crabs and preference. With the babies we adopted craft mesh is perfect for their tiny legs to grip. With most other crabs they can climb directly on the egg crate so you don't really need much for them to climb. I like attaching wheels, plants, Cholla and other thin...

Re: CRAB ID

You have E's! They are super crazy active and can run in all directions at once! You will have a fun time getting them to change shells. They are extremely stubborn when it comes to changing shells!

Re: Saltwater Pool Upgrade! Crabmas in July

I believe the crabs are really liking the saltwater pool. I have seen several hovering around the top at different times. Ateast one crab is really liking it! For the last three days the same crab has been at the bottom of the pool when I wake up in the morning. Trying to see how long he stays in th...

Re: Hamster wheels

We made a wheel out of a saucer. Our crabs never really used it when it laid flat like a plate. We added mesh to the back of the wheel and built a walking area like a normal wheel. The crabs use it more and they try to climb the back of it too. It sits angled back so it it a little different than a ...

Re: Annoying fractions when buying shells

Yea, google is your friend. I don't think the crabbies will care if a shell is 1/64th larger or smaller. I personally think shell sizes measured down to 1/8" is fine in most cases. With our baby crabs that are about a year old 1/16" increments would be plenty. As long as the opening is big enough to...

Re: Saltwater Pool Upgrade! Crabmas in July

That's sounds rather painful. Consider getting a small section of hose - like airline hose, or a piece of plastic hose (9-12 mm will be more than enough) - or an aquarium python so you can drain the water directly into a bucket. Less work than using cups, and also has the added bonus of removing wa...

Re: PPs and Es pools

I think a critter keeper can work. I siliconed egg crate to the back of my glass tank to allow them to climb to it. I also use cork and Cholla for them to climb to reach the top as well. I have seen them climb the egg crate but not as much as the cork and Cholla. With the lip on the top of the tank ...

Re: Got cholla?

I also suggest The Cholla Queen on Etsy. Since she gathers and cut it herself you can message her and she could more than likely do custom lengths. Shipping will probably be more for longer lengths but you will get exactly what you want. We ordered a pound of Cholla from her a month or two ago and r...

Re: How often can you change the “furniture” in your crabitat?

I have been wondering the same thing for a while. If it is something like adding a piece of Cholla, or a changing a hide for a new one I'll do that whenever. If it's a big change such as a total revamp of the tank I try and limit that to every few months if that. All crabs react differently to every...

Re: Best vacation ever!!

With most of the new crabs we get they all pretty much dig and molt the second their claws hit the substrate. Most usually skip meals and water and just dig. I think maybe keep them in this container overnight and give them food that are beneficial for molting. A good meal before placing them in the...

Re: I have Strawberry Zoea! Day 5 water change Update

That's what we were thinking but even checking the 10 gallon tank the jars were in we didn't see any bodies in that water either. The previous day we were down to maybe 35 at most. Their numbers were really dropping 200-100-75-50-35. We are really going to try and be better prepared for next time. I...

Re: PPs and Es pools

Well here's an update on my saltwater pool. About two weeks ago I caught two straws releasing zoea/eggs. The male was holding the female so they could easily float up and out of her shell. I changed out the filter fiber for the first time and did a 90% water change. I have been keeping a log of my w...

Re: Saltwater Pool Upgrade! Crabmas in July

Thanks. I have a "T" in the airline then a control valve for the filter and air stone. I just downsized to a small airstone because I was getting over spray. I'm really trying to be super cautious with it after our floods earlier this year. I also just changed the filter fiber for the first time and...
