Why do some hermit crabs go naked?

Today I went to a pet store and took a look at their hermit crabs. The set up was of course, not proper, which was expected. In the enclosure, there was a dead hermit crab, naked, lying on the substrate (mixture of sand and soil). All the crabs in that enclosure had painted shells so I assume his wa...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Wanted to let you guys know that Dwebble spent her first full night in the main tank with the others. It went way better than I expected! She started climbing EVERYTHING! She then changed shells, and even made friends with the smallest crab in the tank (Digger). I don't think I've ever seen what a h...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

I can't remember - do you use all play sand for sub? How deep is it? It looks a bit dry from the picture, but is it sand castle consistency? How are your heat and humidity? It's 5 parts play sand 1 part Eco Earth. Heat is 77 degrees and humidity is 90%. The substrate is sand castle consistency, by ...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

I'm actually getting a little concerned. She's being really sluggish and almost lethargic today, and she hasn't eaten for the past couple of days. She ate like a monster before but now she just stopped, and she's super sluggish. I don't know if that means anything. I don't know if she's going to mol...

Is she named after the Pokemon? :)
Yes. My friend suggested it and I loved it!

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

So... turns out I'm an idiot. Her eyes are fine, mine suck. XD Her eyes weren't as cloudy as I thought. Also yes, you heard me say she... I recently got to check the gender and she is a girl. I also noticed that she seems to have calmed down a lot since I brought her home. Today she actually trusted...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Update:
It looks like today is molt day! He's burying himself now. So there's probably not gonna be much to say about him until he's done. I'm super excited though. He went for a butload of fresh and saltwater and ate like a monster, and now he's going under.

Wish him luck! 🦀❤️

Honestly, I doubt that the company the pet shop got him from, would know anything about the molting either.
Yeah probably not. I checked on him today though. I waited for him to crawl around so I could get a look at his eyes. They're SUPER cloudy, so he's probably gonna molt here really soon.

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Based on observation I’d say about 80% of the time hermit crabs will attack other crabs when something is off care-wise. I’d guess that when he was being shipped he wasn’t offered many (if any) food options. Once he molts I’m sure things will be fine. :) EDIT: Fruits contain sugars, which can give ...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Update: Could be expecting a molt pretty soon??? I smoothed over the sand last night to track his activity, and the tracks pretty much conformed what I suspected. He goes for the fruits only. Is this typical before a molt? I'm used to seeing all my pet store crabs eating LOTS of protein and fats bef...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

I doubt they'd know when he molted. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't know what molting was. Okay so I asked. They basically said that they only had him for a month and they never had a hermit crab molt in their shop before. Surprisingly they asked the company they got him from about things li...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

I'm a little worried. He seems kinda "lethargic" today. He's in the moss pit, and when I moved some of the moss aside his antennas were moving like normal, but he didn't eat last night. I don't think he came out at all last night. Is this a problem? I may ask the pet store when was the last time he ...

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

I would like to hear more about this topic. More thoughts from anyone? I would kinda like to hear some testimonies of something like this, myself. I'll keep updating about this as I go. He didn't do too much to the tote last night. He was climbing everything and test driving some other shells. He l...

The rearranging of the tank isn't a sign of aggression.
Remember that the sub needs to be at least 3 times as deep as the crab.
Alright. That is a relief to hear. Thank you. And I'm gonna try to get some more sand soon (I have a crapton of coconut fiber but ran out of sand).

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Hahaha, that's hardly rearranged, not trashed! LOL! I have seen mine do way more damage than that. Wait til they shred up all those beautiful flowers! And dig huge mounds of sub! How deep is that substrate? It's deep enough to fully bury himself, but I would've preferred more. I may get some more p...
