Re: Vertical Crabitat Setup, thoughts?
Thx moe and maddamay, I read a lot on this forum before setting it up and really planned it out before starting. I wish I did have room to lay it horizontally but I just had no other option but to try vertical. I hope it works out to the liking of the crabs. As for the plexiglas, I used a 1/4" thick...

Re: Vertical Crabitat Setup, thoughts?
That's how I got mine too. My daughter went on vacation before college and came home with 2 crabs. In that awful little plastic container. We knew nothing. When she went to school she gave them away to a friend but the friend returned them. So of course mom has to take care of them. The problem is ...

Re: Vertical Crabitat Setup, thoughts?
Yep, don't want flooding. I decided against a false bottom. So, at least while the crabs aren't here with me, I can easily dig around and test the sand for moistness, and only mist if needed. I like the chopstick test!

Re: Vertical Crabitat Setup, thoughts?
That's a big concern too, I don't know what we will do if they decide to be in the process of molting while they are with her, I guess we will figure that out if it needs to be a concern then. definitely don't want to dig anybody up. but if a molt happens here with me, then they would just stay with...

Vertical Crabitat Setup, thoughts?
Hello, I want to share a short video showing the set up I have for 3 medium sized pps. The crabs belong to my daughter who lives in North Carolina while she is attending graduate school (Coastal Environmental Managment @ Duke Univ). She will be bringing her crabs to my house when she is home on scho...

Re: Newbie, but doing my research first...
Ok scarletfire, thx for drawing my attention to the link at the end of the tank size post, I hadn't noticed that before. So based on what jedi master outlines I should be ok w the space i will have for molting. I know turning a tank sideways isn't preferred perhaps but I'm going to make it work. : )

Re: Newbie, but doing my research first...
Lol, no friends that's not what this is about. I'm just turning my tank vertically and putting 10" of substrate. That's it. Not trying to calculate anything. My point above was just that it will be less sand in total than if it was horizontal. So let's start over... my main question was will 18x21 b...

Re: Newbie, but doing my research first...
Ha Ha, I know right! Lol, I've really been working out the details, I'm trying to find the flaws in my plan but so far I can't come up with a reason not to give it a try. We'll see what the hubby says. If I can pull it off I will post pictures. Thanks Hermiesguardian for chiming in. : ) If anything,...

Re: Newbie, but doing my research first...
Thanks for the welcome! As for the weight, I am thinking as a (75g) horizontal tank and filling it 10 inches deep across the whole length of 48" and width of 18" I would need about 5 cubic feet of sand. By turning it upright, the new fill would still be 10 inches deep but now only filling a length o...

Newbie, but doing my research first...
Hi all, I am new to hermit crabs and I will be having 3 pps come to stay with me. I'm guessing close to med sized. I've read through all the help and care guides here (some more than once) and been to the recommended sites, and feel I have a good grasp to get things rolling. This is all such a great...
