Re: Humidity Issues

It can still be the gauge!! Temperature and humidity are two different sensors, one can go while the other is okay. Calibrating it (there's a guide in the caresheets) is a very good idea to make sure it really is a humidity problem and not a gauge problem.

Re: Humidity and Temperature Tips

Plastic wrap the lid, or use Ziploc bags and packing tape, to seal the lid up and hold the humidity in.

Re: Molding

Salt is really helpful in limiting mold, though caution is warranted so it doesn't built up too high in the substrate. Mixing new substrate with drinking strength salwater made from Instant Ocean (or similar) will keep mold growth at bay on the surface of the EE and can cut down on mustiness. If you...

Re: Anything good on Amazon?

The Fluker's hermit crab beach sand is absolutely safe for them. It's only the reptile sands that can potentially be an issue. Calcium and aragonite sands aren't safe unless it's in small additive amounts.

Re: Had to dug up suspected molter due to bacterial bloom, very weak crab.

The downside of the bottle method is that it's hard to get them the darkness they need in order to finish molting properly. It's also not foolproof either, and crabs have gotten inside to attack molters.

Re: How to install hygrometers, thermometers, UTHs?

Okay not gonna lie I kinda didn't yet. It's a digital, and the instructions for calibrating on HCA seemed to apply more for analog ones. Do I still need to calibrate it? Yep. Even the digital ones can be broken out of the box! They also have a tendency to randomly fail after about a year. I've neve...

Re: Eccie size?

This was my biggest guy. He was absolutely wedged into that shell! And he did that to the edge himself to make room for his eyes. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200115/e16fe5a5a503ad95e2d4be3a2afdf0d0.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200115/b0a2a2bb9a3672502c28cc605ecb7fcd.jpg https://uplo...

Re: Eccie size?

My largest had a legspan that was just as big as a Jumbo PP, but because they like tiny shells he never seemed that huge because he never took up as much space. Most Es only survive for a few years in captivity and they don't grow super quick, so it's not a huge worry about their final size if you'r...

Re: Hands-off or hands-on? I'd like to bring a thought to the table

Something to consider about Jonathon and Kate is that Carol was a microbiologist, so she considered a lot of things that most people would never think of. Their tank was always kept pristine so as to avoid bacterial and fungal contamination, but by being allowed to roam the house they we're still ex...

Re: Asking for help, how to properly cycle water tanks

Salt mix usually buffers to around 8.2, to better match sea water. If you have any shells or coral in the pool, that will up the pH as well.

Re: Asking for help, how to properly cycle water tanks

I don't really understand cycled pools but have a 3L salt pool in my tat. It has a filter and an airstone. I've just done a water test and got the following readings with an API test kit. PH 8.4 Ammonia 0.5ppm Nitrate 0ppm Nitrite 0ppm Does this mean I have a cycled pool? No, once it's been cycled ...

Re: Had to dug up suspected molter due to bacterial bloom, very weak crab.

Crabs always take advantage of molters and they must be separated for safety. Since it really sounds like she was ripped from her shell, there could be substational internal damage you aren't seeing. Your other crab is fine by himself. It's not going be anything bad for him to be on his own, and he ...

Re: Local mosses?

Cornell says that for Roundup, it takes up to 174 days for half the product to break down. In pond water it's up to 70 days for the same - and that's only the half life! The biggest worry is environmental and air pollution when it comes to mosses, because they are used a biomonitoring system since t...

I still haven't had a chance to play with it. Hubby uses it for the cats, and to watch for the pizza guy so he can play WOT until the last possible moment. 😂
