Re: Humidity and dried sub

As tanks age, all that extra moisture that was there at the start from having freshly mixed substrate, and that caused condensation, has evaporated out of the tank. In order to keep the levels high and the substrate moist enough, more moisture has to be added back in at that point. Pouring, heavy sp...

Re: University Student Looking for Crab Research

Do a search for coenobita on scholar.google.com Some are open access, some are behind pay walls but many universities can get access for students. There have been many controlled experiments on rearing eggs in labs, field studies, and of course detailed descriptions of species including reproductive...

The picture for the live strawberry hermit crabs is a plushie toy.....
I'm going to go with this is Scam 2.0. I'm betting someone bought the address when the time ran out on renewing the lease, and is just trying to scam as much money as possible before PayPal catches on.

Re: Running out of time

If the hermit sites aren't working out to find someone local, try one of the reptile forums. RFUK is pretty big, Iand I'm sure there are others on Facebook as well although FB is cracking down on pet trading so it's not really permitted. I honestly can't remember the last time we had someone from th...

Follow up question:

How long can freeze dried meat like this stay in the tank? Overnight? 2 nights?

Honestly, until it absorbs so much moisture that it melts or rots.

Re: Ants!

That's good to know in case we ever have that problem. Would that be a situation to dig up molters? We have somewhere around 30 crabs, so there's always crabs down at any given time. It depends how many ants there are. A few is nothing major, so long as the area is cleaned well so they can't lead t...

Re: Ants!

Remove all decor, scrape the top layer of sand, and see if they are coming from inside or outside the tank. If they are just raiding for food, move the location of the tank for now and clean well. Treat for the ants however you normally would. If they have moved into the tank - if you find the white...

Re: Amethyst for Decoration?

If they are solid crystals it should be fine. If they are on any kind of matrix base, that would be a worry as many of those rocks will leech minerals.

Re: Live Mealworms

I've done it several times, usually one crab crawls in and double claws the entire bowl.

Mealworms aren't much to worry about in a crab tank, they don't bury deep, they aren't known for going after live creatures, and they do very poorly in humidity as they are a desert species.

Freeze dried fish and reptile food are treated with Vitamin E, which is a tocopherol.

Re: Bugs !!

I agree with GB, once a crab is dead it will attract all manner of scavengers. Do not panic! Only start to be concerned if you are seeing something on your live ones.

Re: Flukers Heat Mat

@wodesorel - I have a question that doesn't really have anything to do with this topic. Sorry. But I know you're a reptile expert. My daughter has a banana ball python and her thermostat isn't working. She's in college and doesn't really have money for a herpstat, which she has heard is the best br...

Re: Dead crab?

I found an E that had mummified in its shell once at the store. It looked perfect and was wedged completely tight to where it was not coming out, but it was empty inside.
