Re: Black eyed susans?
The risk on these looks low. There's no noted toxins for most animals and isn't used for repellents, though it can effect grazing animals but the mechanism of how it does hasn't been noted anywhere. (Which is confusing.) It seems to be mostly a physical issue that causes this plant to be listed, due...

Re: Research on Hermit Crab Food
Yes, the original unsafe lists were put together using items toxic to other companion mammals, and anything that was listed as an insect pesticide or repellent - even if it was in concentrated essential oil form. I think it's one of the weakest sources of info among crab groups and came from a place...

No, it happened it in 1976. She just mentioned it in passing decades later.

Re: Carol And Jonathon Molting Questions by KyMart
It's Jon and Kate. Personally I think her secret was that she's a microbiologist, so much of what she did early on was based on keeping infection risks low. Small 20 gallon tank with fine gravel that she rinsed and washed frequently. They spent 4 hours a night roaming the house so their immune syste...

Re: Carol And Jonathon Molting Questions by KyMart
If memory serves she would create a molting cave for them using slate, keep watch, and actually help peel their shed exoskeleton off of them. The things she did in the early days with those two are the exact opposite of what is considered standard of care now. I've never been sure if she got extreme...

Re: Beta Fish Questions
Nerites have never been bred in captivity, they have a really complex life cycle that hasn't been able to be duplicated yet. I like mine, though females can pepper every surface in the tank with eggs that stick like glue. I keep mine brackish and they're somewhere around 6 years now, maybe older. I ...

Re: Beta Fish Questions
I've been keeping micro tanks for about twenty years now, and honestly I'd suggest going with the 10 or even a 20 gallon. A 20 gallon long is an easy tank to work with, and during the sales are reasonably priced and aren't much more than a 10. Tanks less than 10 gallons are a specialty size, which m...

Admin - this is the second time I've had to clean up this thread. This is the adoption section, not the conversation section, read the rules. If you aren't able to adopt this crab then don't post here.

Re: New Hermit Crab Owner for large purple pincher
When crabs molt, the only thing they'll eat for a week or two (at least) will be their old shed skin. Since that was thrown out, it can be substituted for with eggshells, shrimp tails and/or cuttlebone. I never expect them to eat "real" food at first as they're just not built to do so, a normal molt...

Re: Fungus?
Unfortunately yes, and they can spread to nearby surfaces as well. You'll always have some spores in the environment no matter what (algae is the same way), but it seems like once there's already mushrooms growing then it's more likely for them to start back up again faster.

Re: Help!!! Grain mite infestation the second time around is driving me to tears!
Grain mites need two things for their population to explode - a steady food source, and humidity higher than 50%. Unfortunately so do hermit crabs. You can definitely battle against them and while it's almost never a clean sweep, numbers can be controlled. Food sources - not just what the crabs are ...

Re: Fungus?
Spores can last anywhere from a few months to a few years depending on the species. If you just wanted to wash the tank out well and refill with saltwater treated substrate it should be enough. I just tend to go nuclear if I have to clean rather than worry about having to do it again, but I hate cle...

Re: Sudden Aggression After Molt by KyMart
It's roughly 5 gallons of space per 50 pounds of sand, and about 1 gallon of space per brick once it settles into place. Depending on how deep you want it you'll need more substrate. This should give you around 6 inches of depth once it's patted down.

Re: Where to actually put my tank?
You're looking at about 200 pounds of dead weight, so it should be something sturdy that can handle that much over extended periods. Most newer furniture just isn't made to do that anymore.
