Re: Play sand

The benefit of having EE mixed in with the sand is that it helps hold moisture, and helps with humidity. But some people use all sand with no problems. Once a crab is buried, definitely don't dig him up. If you put the EE on top like you have it, the crabs will eventually mix it in anyways! LOL!

Re: Hi! Potential crab owner with some questions :)

Many people use the digital Acurite ones. Digital is considered more accurate than analog. And even here in Canada, I found a digital Acurite at the local hardware store for less than $10 on sale (I think regular was only $15), so not a huge expense!

Re: Found possible molting crab under water dish

I can't really see from the photo, but it sounds to me like you have done the right thing. Putting something over her to protect her and keep her separate from the other crabs, but not cave in her hole. She obviously isn't ready to come up yet, if she dug down a bit deeper. Did you see any exo in th...

Re: Hi! Potential crab owner with some questions :)

No problem! I have had my two crabs for 9 years, and the HCA is the only source I have used for information about their care. I still frequently refer to the care sheets, the admins have put a lot of work into them and the information is excellent.

Re: New Tank Prep

I have used the vinegar method for the two upgrades I did. Rinsed with RO water (that's what I use in place of dechlorinated), let it air dry. The 20 gallon was pretty gross, I let the vinegar sit for a while before scrubbing, but it worked well!

Re: ID confirmation

The dark one definitely looks like my PP's. I have no experience with any other species. But if the light one is a PP - wow, he's so pale! OM, is your Dave always that color? Would some color-enhancing foods help darken them up? Cher has often been lighter than Sonny (last time I saw her she was clo...

Re: Curious about my hermits behavior after changing shells

Welcome to HCA! You are correct, it is a fabulous source of information for everything you need to know about crabs! Do you have a number of shells for him to choose from? Like HG said, sometimes they just aren't quite sure if the new pants are better than the old pants or not. LOL. Some crabs chang...

Re: Hi! Potential crab owner with some questions :)

I've been considering becoming a hermit crab owner, but I want to make sure I have everything right before I buy them. Thanks in advance! Curly - All the info you need can be found in the care sheets. Read through them, and ask any further questions that you have! I will provide the links below. 1.)...

Re: Question For Those With Cats and Crabs

Only my brain-damaged mini-cat likes to get up on the tank and watch 'crabby TV'. She only weighs 5 pounds, and I have a plexi glass lid. When I only had saran wrap, I had to keep the door to the room locked so there were no cat-related mishaps.

Re: Crab out of shell

No, it certainly came on really sudden but I'm suspicious our crabs are not coming out at all. Even for food, water... I'm putting out some cooked shrimp for them tonight. Its solid white and if any touch it I'll be able to see substrate on it by tomorow. Ive done everything Ive read about except s...

Re: Molting or not?

Hard to say what is happening. Could be molting, or de-stressing, or just hanging out, LOL.

If you fill in the Emergency template, we can help make sure you have everything optimal to give him the best chance.

Re: About One Month into being New Crab Owner

I buy my dry foods from the Hermit Crab Patch and Canadian Chubby Crab. One of the admins of the HCA has a store too. You can also get dried foods at some health food or pet stores. I buy freeze dried shrimp at a pet store, they are marketed for turtles. You just need to make sure they are organic a...

LOL! No, I watched it go from a whole surf-board, to a half! Every time I checked on them, there was Sonny, munching away on it! What was left was all chewed up with big chunks missing.

Re: How much calcium is recommended?

Now that my crabs are bigger, it's kind of fun to see just how much Cuttlebone they can chew off! I swear Sonny ate half a surf-board when he came up from his last molt.
