Re: New Crabs Hiding

Sonny just came up at the end of last week - he had been down since the third week of June!

Re: Cleaning crabitat question

Hmmmm.....many products that are marketed for hermit crabs are actually unsafe for them. 'Hermit crab sand' is usually calcium sand, which is NOT safe. Playsand, which comes in big bags and is cheap at hardware stores, is safe. Many of us use a mixture of 5 parts play sand to 1 part of EE. It needs ...

Re: Missing parts

GB gave great advice! Just to add that if by 'coaxing' him out of his shell, you mean to physically pull him out and put him in another shell- don't do it. Offer correct shells in a variety and he will eventually change on his own.

Re: Missing parts

You don't need to clean out all your substrate - just spot clean poop and any bits of food. You can add more substrate to what is there now. If anyone is under the sub, don't add more than an inch at a time and don't pack it down. But if everyone is above ground, you can add as much as you want. Als...

Re: What should I do

Leave them. There is not harm in leaving them, but lots of potential harm in digging them up!

Re: What are your crabs up to?

Yay! Sonny finally came up from his molt! He went down sometime in mid to late June - so had been under for at least three months! Even my husband was sure he was dead, LOL. And yes, after 8 years and many molts, I still worry every time they are down!

Re: Crab has lost two legs

I have given my advice below. 1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? All eco Earth 3 in. deep Curly: Crabs need at least 6 inches, or 3x as deep as your largest crab, whichever is deeper. Many of us use a mixture of 5 parts playsand (big bag at hardware store is cheap) to...

Re: Calming dogs?

I use a Thunder Shirt for my little dog, Sailor. It makes a world of difference during storms. He used to shake, drool, and hide when there was any thunder. Now he is obviously aware of the thunder, but he stays on the couch or bed with me, and there is no drooling or shaking. For his day-to-day anx...

Re: Unexpected hermit crabs.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....but they can be gone for a lot more than a month! LOL! Unless there are extreme circumstances (bacterial bloom, flooding), don't dig for at least FOUR months. Be sure to keep all tank conditions optimal (temp, humidity, etc) and put out both dechlorinated fresh...

Yes, I would put both salt and fresh waters in with him. What brand of salt are you using to make the salt water?

Re: Tank Heating

You can insulate OVER an Ultratherm.

You can only insulate AROUND a Zoo Med, you can not put the insulating material over top of the actual heater.

Re: Heater

Not the same. The ones on the left that are called Repti Therm are made by Zoo Med. They can not be insulated over. They stick to the tank, and when peeled off (ie- to move to another tank or location), they can be damaged. The ones on the right are the UltraTherm. They can be insulated over, and ar...

Re: Surface Molt question

A surface molt almost always means that something is wrong - crabs don't choose to molt on the surface if they have ideal conditions. I have given my advice in bold below. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Small shells and sand. Commercial product bought at pet store Cu...

Re: Heater

The thing with Zoomed heaters is that you can't insulate over top of the heater, only around it. With the Ultratherms, you can put insulating material right over top.
