Re: do crabs pee?

They use their little legs to move the poop from the back where their anus is, out of the shell.

Re: How long?

They should be underneath the substrate to molt, you should not see them. If they are molting on the surface where you can see them, there is probably something wrong in their environment or diet.

Re: trust

I don't agree that it is fun for the crabs to be handled. They see us as predators.

Re: Buried crab

Yes, as Angel said, the pop bottle method is if they need to be isolated from the other crabs for a reason like a surface molt. The only time one of my crabs dug up the other one was when I didn't have enough depth of substrate (I failed to add more substrate as Sonny got larger!).

Re: How long?

Hard to say. Cher, my smaller crab, has always stayed under longer than Sonny, my larger crab. 3 months isn't unusual for mine.

Re: Buried crab

Crabs do NOT need to be isolated to molt. They should be left in the main tank. With proper substrate of proper depth, they will do just fine. The only time a crab should be dug up is in the rare occurrence of a flood or bacterial bloom.

Do you mean marine salt? What brand of dechlorinator and salt do you use?

Re: trust

Most of us on this forum take a hands off approach. As SG said, they don't have the neurological capacity to 'bond' like a dog or cat does.

Re: Molting stress!!!

If they are hollow with no body parts inside, it is exoskeleton. If there are crabs who are under the substrate, do not dig. If the crab did pass away, there's nothing you can do. If you dig, you could harm others who are under there and are alive. It is important to have enough substrate (3x as dee...

Re: A new cast!

I have been around the HCA since 2010 when I got my crabs Sonny and Cher.

Definitely need the UTH's on the sides or back (or in my case, both!) of the tank.

Re: Almond Butter Covered Crab

Rosie and Odelhay are correct. You need to use marine salt and it needs to be mixed properly. I just wanted to add that it can be mixed in smaller quantities than a gallon, LOL. I also use Instant Ocean, but mix it up by the pint (2 cups).

Re: Funky Cracked Big Pincher After Molt

Wode, do you know what caused it when it happened to your crabs? Was it an injury during molting, or after?

Re: Funky Cracked Big Pincher After Molt

I have no advice re- the healing mix. But wondering if he is using the claw normally? Or does it seem to bother him?
(Not that I have experienced anything like that before, just wondering if it's something that seems painful?)
