Re: Power Outages
The few times we have had power outages in the winter, I have luckily been home. I immediately go and pile a bunch of comforters / blankets over the tank, being sure to cover all sides. The longest outage we had was about 6 or 7 hours, it was about -24C outside. The house did get quite cool (we slep...

Re: Power Outages
HP....HCA absolutely recommends AGAINST putting a heater under the tank. Not only can it injure or potentially kill crabs, it can also be a fire hazard.
CL77 is correct that we recommend heat pads (UTH's) go only on the back or sides.

Re: Depth of pools
I don't think you'll find much contradicting advice on HCA re- pools. They should be deep enough that crabs can fully submerge if they choose to, but also have a way to climb out. Do your pools have a way for them to get out?

Re: New Crab Owner
When you say 'shallow warm end'....how big a difference do you have between the ends of the tank?

Just be sure to put the rice bag on the OUTSIDE of the tank, not inside.

Re: silk plants
Yeah, I have used silk plants in the past, and the crabs tore them apart eventually. Just keep an eye on them, and remove anything that becomes too damaged.

Re: New crabs !
Freshly molted crabs will usually have more hair on their legs, and will have little sharp black toenails at the end of their legs. I'm in Canada too, and between shipping and exchange, it's terrible ordering from the US. I have a food order in with Canadian Chubby Crabs - have you ordered from her ...

Re: Moistening substrate
The problem is that once a crab tunnels underneath, you don't know where it is. As Joe said, the safest is to add some water along the edges where the sand meets the glass. It will disperse into the sand. You can probably add a quarter cup in each of 3 or 4 areas, then check the next day to see how ...

Re: Naked crab for more than 12 hours
A crab will drop it's shell when it is too weak to carry it. There may be some things that can be improved in your tank. 1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Sand Curly - Is it play sand, or another type of sand? How deep? Is it moistened to sand castle consistency or d...
