Re: How long will it usually take for new crabs to become comfortable & active?

Definitely providing proper nutrition, including sources of protein and calcium daily, is good. Be sure to read the food guide, and the nutrition pyramid. What brand of dechlorinator and salt are you using? As long as you have enough room (ie - not too many crabs in a tank, depending on size of crab...

Re: Crab escaped, found empty shell...

That's great that you found him. I agree with Wode, let him do his own thing if he is mobile. He will know if he needs salt or fresh water. Keep an eye on him, in case he needs to be isolated from the other crab. Give him some good healing foods. You need to include a source of calcium daily, in add...

Crabs are funny people. He might just feel safe there. Are your temp and humidity good? Do you have deep enough sub?

Re: Crabs always Underground? (AGAIN)

As HG said, you should never dig up crabs unless there is an emergency such as a flood or bacterial bloom. Doing so can be fatal, if they are mid-molt.

Re: Strawberry HC

There is a care sheet in the 'Care Sheets' section regarding Strawberries. Was there something that isn't covered in the care sheets that you were wondering?

When you say 'hermit sand'...what exactly do you mean? There are types of sand that are marketed for hermit crabs that are not safe. Play sand (sold at hardware stores for under $10 for a 50lb bag) is the type of sand that is needed. What brand of dechlorinator and salt are you using? Do you have a ...

Re: Salt Water Question

How long did your strawberry live? Edit: The double strength salt water myth was a thing for a while, because people were desperate to find any way to keep them alive in captivity. It made no difference, and because it is unnatural it hasn't been recommended in a long time. Thank you for clarifying...

Re: Salt Water Question

Totally agree with JoeH. I mean, they live where brackish water is available in their natural habitat, so it would only make sense to offer both. Dechlorinated water (using a product such as Prime) for the fresh water, and then mixing in a marine salt (such as Instant Ocean) for the salt water. The ...

Re: Soon to be new hermit crab parents

Moving a tank and/ or crabs can be tricky. You are correct that moving it while crabs are underground could cause their tunnels and caves to collapse. But it is also not recommended to dig crabs up once they are underground. So what do you do? There are a couple of HCA members who have moved, and wh...

Re: UTH my hermit crabs are cold!!!

That is correct that you can not re-use a mat that sticks. You also can not insulate over top of them - but you can insulate around them and on the other walls. People are of mixed opinions regarding lights. Read through the care sheet, lots of info there. I decided to to add any light, because my c...

Re: Heat

Huh. I confess that I also plug my iron into the other plug (the one that the power bar isn't plugged into). So we are supposed to only have one UTH plugged into an outlet, and nothing else?! I wonder if a short-circuit has ever happened, or if it is just one of those warnings that is for a theoreti...

Re: Soon to be new hermit crab parents

Crabs do not need to be isolated to molt. It is better to have proper conditions, with deep enough sub and not an over crowded tank, and to let them stay in the tank to molt. The only time a crab needs to be isolated is if it is sick or weak and at risk of being hurt or killed by the other crabs. It...

Re: Surface molt? What do I do?

Welcome to the HCA! Does he look normal, like his coloring? In a surface molt, the crab will shed it's exo while on the surface, rather than digging down in the substrate. A surface molt is a sign that something is not right in the crab's conditions/ water/ diet/ environment. Him being inactive coul...

Yes, I do use a power strip. I have never had a problem. What was the reason that was given for not using a power bar or extension cord?
