Re: 3 molting, changing rooms. dig them up?

Neither is ideal, both options are risky and could potentially be fatal. The best option would be to set up a new tank in the new room, and then move the crabs over as they come up.

Re: Changing substrate

If you have proper substrate, you do not need to ever change the substrate. Unless there is a flood or bacterial bloom, the sub will be just fine. I have had my crabs for almost 9 years. I have never replaced the substrate. I have added more as they have grown and as I have upgraded to larger tanks,...

Re: How often do you buy new shells?

I have ordered from Naples Sea Shells. It's getting so expensive now that Sonny and Cher are getting so big!

To answer how often, I order when I know I am going to be in the US so shipping isn't so horrible!

Re: Hermit crab out of shell and pale!

Try putting him in a bowl with just a mm or two of fresh water in the bottom. Put a few different shells with him, and see if he will go into a shell on his own. What types of shells do you have? Do you have a few that would be appropriate size? Is that green one painted? It looks a bit too big for ...

Re: Hermit crab out of shell and pale!

Do you mean un-bury the one that is under? Is the substrate still sandcastle consistency? Distilled water is not dechlorinated water. Better to use tap water and a proper dechlorinator such as Prime. Most products marketed for crabs aren't actually appropriate. That salt water is not correct. After ...

Re: Hermit crab surrounding itself with shells, and not moving.

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? I use half play sand and half substrate at about 4 inches Curly - Do you mean Eco Earth? Your sub needs to be at least 6 inches, or three times as deep as your largest crab, whichever is deeper. It needs to be moist enough to hold it...

Re: Hermit crab out of shell and pale!

Agree with HG, a naked crab will die and needs to be re-shelled ASAP. If you fill in the Emergency Template, we can help trouble shoot a bit better.

Re: Sand

All of the substrate needs to be sand castle consistency. If your sand is dry now, you need to add water to it as well. You can mix the sand and EE together and then add dechlorinated water and mix it up until it's all the right consistency.

I also use the sand and EE mix, but I recall reading that straight EE has a higher risk of flooding.

To add pictures, many of us use the Tapatalk app. There's another way but I can't remember now, LOL.

Welcome to crabbing! I have had my two, Sonny and Cher, for almost 9 years!

Re: What are your crabs up to?

Well, Cher came up from the shortest molt she has ever had....only to return under ground again the very next day. Now I am wondering if her 'extremely long molts' have always been like this. She usually stays under much longer than Sonny, even tho he is larger. Maybe she doesn't stay down all that ...

Re: Hermit crab sitting in same position for days??

When I collect leaves, I try to get the ones that have dried but not fallen from the trees yet. Then I put them in a tub and let them dry out completely. Then I crunch them up and put them in a big zip loc bag in the freezer. I figure the freezer will kill off any bugs, and getting the leaves off th...

I also keep Cuttlebone in the tank all the time. I give eggshell now and then, and a 'calcium mix' I ordered from Chubby Crab or from HCP.

Re: Crabs always Underground?

When you say shell-based sand, do you mean Calcium sand? Do you have a bag or box that it came in? Also, a 'hill' isn't appropriate, substrate needs to be deep all over the tank. You can have a 'slope', but even at the most shallow area of the slope, it needs to be at least 6 inches. You can add a b...

Re: Crabs always Underground?

The soft guideline is four months - anything less than that is totally normal and no need to worry, if all your tank conditions are good. • Back in Ohio, we set up a better habitat: - 10 gal tank Curly - A 10 gallon will become too small eventually, and you will need to upgrade to a bigger tank - se...
