Re: There’s mites crawling on my Halloween crab and he’s suffering help

Is there any way you can borrow a phone with a good camera and post a photo?

Re: Green sand

I got a little baggie from Canadian Chubby Crab in the past - it was the first time I had fed green sand, and the baggie didn't last too long because they liked it so much! LOL!

Re: Moldy Substrate?

As stated, the white fuzzy mold isn't bad for the hermit crabs - it's only really an issue if the humans are allergic. Like Riniky said, mold will happen in any environment where the temp and humidity are as high as crabs need. As for air circulation, they get enough air exchange when we open the li...

Re: Green sand

I bought the little 10 gallon box. Up til now, I have only bought small baggies of it when I ordered food. I think the 10 gallon box will last me a very long time! LOL!

Re: Green sand

Well, that's smaller than what I had found! I think I will buy it. I do know there is someone in the closest city who has hermit crabs, maybe I will message her and see if she wants to split it. I will order that and a box of Instant Ocean from Amazon, which will qualify me for free shipping! Thanks...

Green sand

Where does everyone buy their green sand? I have bought small baggies with my dried food, but would like to have a larger supply so I can leave a dish of it in the tank for the crabs to munch on. I tried a couple of pet stores in my nearest city, but they didn't have any. I will be in the US next we...

Re: Hermit Crab lost 2 legs

Measure the opening of the shell - that's how you want to buy them, by the opening not by the size of the shell. I borrowed the little math set thing from my niece to see how accurate my using a measuring tape was. And it wasn't bad. Yes, my crabs have totally used most of the shells I have bought -...

Re: Food storage

Yep, I keep pretty much all my little bags of dried crab food in a big Tupperware tub in the freezer!

Re: Salt build up

Yes, it seems to be on the sides and back where my UTH's are, not on the front. I live rurally, and we have a well - but we can't drink the well water, so have to buy our drinking water. It is RO water, from the local farm supply store. That's all I have ever used in the tank, no other water. I was ...

Salt build up

I saw something white at the edge of the sub, and picked at it, thinking it was a chunk of eggshell or something. Turns out it was what appears to be salt build up. And not just a little, big hunks of it. I used fresh water to mix all my sub, and haven't really ever needed to mist. If I add water, i...

Re: Surface Molt/Naked Crab

I agree that a crab would not shed their exo and then dig under the sub.

Unfortunately, I think this is a deceased crab. Sorry to say it.

Re: Moldy Substrate?

Sorry I can't help with the spots. Had you mixed the calcium sand in with the EE? If you humidity is 78-80% with the lid sealed completely, it will likely go too low if you poke holes in it. Where it is now is ideal. You are correct that they get enough air flow when you open the tank to change wate...

Re: Change In color with molting?

It is not unusual for a crab to molt a couple of times in short order. Or to just come up and go back down for unknown reasons. Do you have a big enough tank and deep enough substrate?

Re: New and excited owner

Yep, welcome!
I have had my crabs for over 9 years. The only time one dug the other up was when I didn't have enough substrate - I had upgraded tanks and the crabs had grown , and it wasn't at least three times as deep as my largest crab.
