Re: White mold over buried (molting?) new crab

Yeah, I have new water dishes that I want to put in but am in the same boat as you! I was waiting for Sonny to come up, and then Cher went under! That looks like just surface mold to me, likely from a piece of food they dragged out of the food dish. You should be able to just pinch it off the surfac...

Re: Molting or not?

I have given my suggestions in bold below. 1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? A mix of coconut fiber and playsand. 5 inches deep. Curly - Your substrate needs to be at least 3 times as deep as your largest crab, or 6 inches, whicever is deeper. If your crabs are large...

Re: hermit crab seems to have molted in a span of a few days?

Hmmm....a surface molt means that something may not be right in your tank conditions.
If you would like to fill in the Emergency Template, we could help you troubleshoot.

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

The rearranging of the tank isn't a sign of aggression.
Remember that the sub needs to be at least 3 times as deep as the crab.

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Hahaha, that's hardly rearranged, not trashed! LOL! I have seen mine do way more damage than that. Wait til they shred up all those beautiful flowers! And dig huge mounds of sub! How deep is that substrate?

Re: Crab Out Of Shell

Sorry about the loss of your crab. Just a couple of suggestions: That brand of salt water isn't safe. You want to use a dechlorinator such as Prime, and a marine salt such as Instant Ocean. See the Water care sheet for further info. Zoo Med hermit crab food is not considered a safe appropriate food,...

Re: Updating crabitat! What are your thoughts?

Hahaha, you live in Texas, right?? I live in Canada, and have actually lived very far up north in the arctic....so I find the 'freeze to death' comment rather funny! :) I have multipe UTH heaters - one on each side and two on the back - which I plug/ unplug depending on the season/ house temp. It's ...

Not to hijack this from your awesome climber and bridge, but do you cover you lid with saran/ plastic wrap to hold the humidity in?

Re: Pet Store Care Guide

The 'Basic Care Sheet' for all types of crabs has pretty much all the info to start. Of course I am sure that you would need to reference the HCA if you used it - and likely ask the admins for permission. I wish the pet stores in my closest city carried shells, or I should say proper shells not just...

Re: Updating crabitat! What are your thoughts?

Wow! That must be a big tank! Hard to tell from the picture.
Why would you move them in winter? If any of your crabs are under, you won't want to move the tank or you could collapse their tunnels/ caves.

Looking good!
Do you mean a 50 pound bag? It's hard to tell how deep your substrate is?

Re: 2 Crabs from Boardwalk... Temp Tank... 1 Molting... Thoughts/Advice Appreciated!

Hahaha, everybody wants a bigger tank as soon as we get our upgrade set up! I went from 10 to 20 to 55....and have been jealous of people's 75 gallon tanks!
