Re: Es or Strawberries?
No offence to anything I say, I am just offering my option. Please don't take this the wrong way at all! :) You looking to keep one of the hardest species of LHC known to mankind and you have only kept hermit crabs for a month. Even though they are pretty - who can say no to those beautiful polished...

Re: Local pet store vs. big chains
I personally believe that local stores are most willing to listen to their buyers advise compared to chains, so they make a great place to change a crabs life. Plus they often willing to help out anyone in a timely and helpful manner! Like hermieluv1 said, they have great deals too! Luckily, I never...

Re: Hermit crab pool! Advice?
I suggest adding some ornaments like fish safe plants or decor or using some nice holey rock (like lava rocks!). However, using zip ties as rungs is another good idea too, and is a cheap & easy way. :) (Are you sure the crab was trying to get out not just "playing around"? My crabs do this all the t...

Re: Maybe not a "Blueberry" After All?
Thats one beautiful indo, I love these guys! <3 I read that Indos are really gentle giants (infact, I believe they are the largest coenobita. sp to date), even though they carry around a massive claw! I read that they are prone to "shallow moulting", basically they don't dig down far enough. However...

Re: Crab Assistance idea
Maybe a better option is to have a mentor program, a person where a newbie can sign up to and is "assigned" a person where they can ask question about the site & crabs until they get into the hang of thing? :) However, i sure that if a newbie has a question, that she/he is safe to ask to all of us. ...

Re: Updating my tote crabitat. Need help with sizing.
I would say that your biggest crab is a medium at most, the smallest looks like a teeny/small. It is a bit hard to tell though & a good link to size your crabs is hermit crab sizing chart (Plus it is easier for people to see to IMO! OK, probably just me... but still.) Just save it in word & print it...

Re: How do you feed your Crabs
Mostly whatever I eaten for dinner. If I eat it all - what, it taste good - or it isn't appropriate for crabs - eg takeaway - then I will use cereal instead. However, fresh foods are the main staple of their diet.

Re: New, and could use a bit of advice.
Personally I would leave her, stressing her out could make it worse. As long as you keep the humidity & heat at the proper levels - along with offering the other crab dishes of water (both SW & FW) I would leave the crabs be. If possible, maybe move your active crab to a temporary container like tot...

UPDATE #4: Bad news... He seemed to somehow lose his left back leg during his molting process.... it's completely gone, and I don't even know what happened. I hadn't noticed earlier since he was sort of hiding when I came to check on him a few times, and now I can understand why... is this normal? ...

Re: New, and could use a bit of advice.
Like mom23 said, i would leave the crab in the tank until you smell anything that smells like fish, once the crab smells like fish she has passed. I still believe that the crab is doing a surface moult, it make be a good idea to keep the crab in the dark, so it may be worth covering the crab with a ...

Re: how many crabs per tank?
That is a great link soiltengringa shared. A good rule of thumb is to have 10g for the first crab & every additional crab is an extra 5g for anything smaller than a medium. Anything larger then a medium I would say 20g for the first crab, and every 10g for each additions. Mostly it is an trial and e...

Re: New to hermies and wanting to adopt more?
If the shallowest side is at least 6 inches, then it should be fine, however if it like 2 inches then I think adding some more substrate would be a good idea.
Haha, don't worry we all like that. Even now I still like that.

Re: Do hermit crabs ever go dormant?
I have heard that crabs can go "dormant" when they don't have to right conditions. If so, it worth double checking everything & making sure it is safe. It might also be a good idea to copy the emergency help template too.

Re: New to hermies and wanting to adopt more?
I love your tote tank! The only thing I would suggest it making the substrate at least 6 inches deep in all areas! Otherwise, thats all I can say, everyone else has said the other things I would lookout for/change ect. :) BTW, i see that you just joined! Welcome to HCA, I really hope you like it here.
