Re: Plants!

I like live plants in my tank. The hermits are very hard on them. Some they trash completely, and others are only harmed as a result of them climbing on them. I incorporate them into the tank knowing that they are possibly a temporary item. I have found that planting them right in the substrate make...

Re: Pet Stores in Twin Cities, MN?

Don't take shallow substrate in pet stores as a bad sign. The substrate should not be deep in the store, so that they won't be dug up by other crabs or by employees to sell. Exactly! It was probably the first pet store tank of hermits where I actually saw the hermits moving around, not just balled ...

Re: Pet Stores in Twin Cities, MN?

Yesterday I found myself back in my old stomping grounds and dropped in on the pet store in Har Mar mall. The crabs there looked pretty good. They had heat. The substrate was thin, but it was moist. I almost took one home, which says a lot because I said I wasn't going to buy pet store hermits again.

Re: Favorite / Least favorite food

Their favorites would be peanut butter, honey, coconut, shrimp, moss, and earthworms.

They consistently do not eat lettuce, bread, or raw hamburger. I continue to offer them from time to time because you just never know when they will change their mind.

Re: What do you look for in stores for your hermits?

A couple of the grocery stores that I go to have small plants in their floral section. I'm always looking for appropriate plants to rotate through/give the crabs to trash in the crabitat.

What do you think of this for use in a tank?

I'm going for a natural woodsy look in my crabitat. It would make an awesome moss pit if i...

I didn't know Har Mar still had a pet store. I used to live a mile from that store.

It was definitely the right thing to do. It would have haunted me to leave one in those conditions.

Looks good! I like the cork on the right wall. How did you attach it to the tank?

Re: Best lights for growing plants in crabitat?

You gave me just what I needed to do a little more searching and find the answers. Thank you aussieJJDude! Here is a condensed version of what I found. Plants grow best with a 6500K bulb. These do not provide an appreciable amount of UVB so would not be considered appropriate for a source of UVB lig...
