Re: New and Nervous Owner
Looking good! I don’t see any spare shells, though, for the crabs to change into. If you’ve not already, you can find a lot of information about the number and types of extra shells recommended in the care sheets

Re: New and Nervous Owner
Welcome to HCA!!! It looks like you are doing pretty good so far and I would like to personally thank you for giving your crabs a better environment (not too many people care about the well being of their crabs, or we would have lots more members .) I just have 1 question for you... is the whi...

Re: New and Nervous Owner
Looks like you’re off to a good start! That’s great that you’ve been able to get the heat and humidity up. That said, I would suggest getting digital gauges to replace the analog - the analog gauges are notoriously unreliable (I can tell you horror stories about trying to regulate my late tree frogs...

Re: New and Nervous Owner
Hello, and welcome! CurlySister beat me to recommending reading through the HCA care sheets, but I think it’s a recommendation that bears repeating :) The majority of the proprietary “Hermit Crab Kits” our there marketed to new LHC caretakers are woefully inadequate, and in many cases actually inclu...

Re: Xanthan Gum?
I can’t personally think of any reason why it would be considered unsafe, based on the method of production, the ingredients from which it’s derived, and the relatively minuscule quantity that’s included in any given recipe (1/8th tsp of this stuff goes a long way.. i’ve had the same small bag of it...

Re: Crabs not eating calcium
I have a cuttlebone and a sand dollar available at all times to my two pp's, but I haven't seen them really eating any or going near them. The explored the sand dollar a bit when I first put it in, but they have completely ignored the cuttlebone and don't really go near the sand dollar anymore. I'm...

Re: Death Smell... now what?
I understand the crabs have only been fed dry food for the last few days, but prior to that were they fed any seafood (fresh raw or cooked)? It could be that a piece of hidden seafood from a previous feeding is finally beginning to go seriously “off” in your tank, causing the smell.

How do i insulate?? I had read that you can use cardboard. Different people have different approaches and use different materials (cardboard with aluminum foil, hard foam insulation, reflectix double-sided insulation), and there’s at least one user who has posted step by step instructions for how t...

Re: Winter heating
The Fluker’s heat mats can be insulated. You can also insulate the sides of your tank that don’t have a UTH attached. I insulate my heat mats, and in winter I also insulate one wall of the tank that doesn’t have a heat mat. Just that added insulation increases the temperature by at least 10 degrees.

She looks about the same size as my Sonny! Where'd you get her shell? I need a few more that size, and he really likes those polished ones. I just wish they weren't so darned expensive! I have a bunch of shells that size (and larger) which I got from Naples, including a couple polished ones: http:/...

It’s my understanding that you can safely insulate the Fluker’s Premium Heat Mat.

Re: List of Questions for Hermit Crab Care
Hi there, welcome to the HCA. Before providing a response, I would appreciate a bit more information and context about the general approach and purpose of your paper, what types of resources you’re accessing for information, and how the opinions of informal interviewees are going to be used, present...
