Re: Fall crabitat redecoration!
Anyone with this many hermit crabs has to be crazy...There's no other way to describe it. Don't even get me started on the cork!! That stupid cork round is fine as long as my teenies are the only ones messing with it, but then one of my bigger ones randomly decides to haul his or her fat butt up the...

Re: Followup to false bottom posts...
Last question, what did you place on top of your long pipe so crabs wouldn't get in? (Megaholm, I see you have something shoved in there -- is it cocofiber? I'm assuming lots of it, so the crabs can't just pull it out or anything)....thanks! Just a piece cut from a coconut climbing background (like...

My son checked and found that our two hoses are being pinched by the lid. Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution that doesn't include cutting into the mesh of the lid? Yep, I had that problem. What I did was loosely ziptie the hose to the top of the screen lid, and lay a piece of foi...

Re: Fall crabitat redecoration!
Thanks everyone!! I had fun redecorating it, and despite my husband calling me crazy he helped too. The crabs don't seem impressed, but I'll pretend they're grateful. Erik, I haven't had any issues with the stick in all the time I've had it. It's actually just tied to the moss pit, and part of...

Fall crabitat redecoration!
I wanted to spice things up a little in the tank, and went...um...a little crazy. I got a decoration at Petsmart, some silk leaves and leaf garland at Michael's, and went crazy. Oh, and I got glow in the dark gummy decals. Of course. I also took the opportunity to add another shell shop, wipe down a...

Re: Mice
Corn chips, yes! When I had female rats years ago, it was such a delightful smell. Everyone thought I was nuts. Boys, though...oh, boy. Not sure how the mice compare to rats, but male rats are nasty. Fred and George (my 2) pee everywhere, sleep in their pee, pee on the side of the cage, pee out of t...

Big aspirations..
My Craigslist freebie crab, Samwell, came up sometime last night. He's crammed into a whale eye shell and I decided to put in some more appropriately sized turbos for him to examine. He promptly ignored them, but one of my other crabs, Melisandre, is a shell-changing diva so she had to check them ou...

Re: found pieces.
If the dropped limbs were a result of stress from prior bad conditions, I don't think there was much you could have done. I lost 2 crabs shortly after I got them, and dropped limbs were the first sign that something was wrong. I had them in ideal conditions, offered yummy safe foods, and they still ...

Re: Followup to false bottom posts...
My pipe comes up pretty high, almost to the top of the tank, which I probably didn't have to do but the crabbies just view it as another climbing spot so I'm glad I did it. Here are a couple (bad) ones of how it looks in my tank: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v410/xadrienne/Mobile%20Uploads/2014...

Re: Followup to false bottom posts...
I bought a super cheap manual siphon pump at Rural King for I think $7 to use to get water out, if I ever need to. To me the pipe sticking up is kind of an eyesore in my tank, so I bought a fake vine and tried to cover it as best I could. And I wedged a scrap piece of coconut climbing background in ...

Re: Mice
I love their setup! So creative. I better not show it to my 2 rats or they'll wonder why lowly mice have a cooler habitat than them.

Re: Wood lice,cypress bedding,and desperation
Booklice are harmless and even beneficial, since they eat fungi/mold. :) As far as cypress bedding, I believe it's not great for the humid conditions crabbies require because it tends to mold really fast when wet. I don't know that's it's unsafe, but I would avoid it because sand is just easier. Pla...

Re: Alan's Hermit Crabs
Welcome!! I agree, just go ahead and add the substrate. I've had 6-8" from the beginning, a mix of cocofiber and playsand, and as long as it's the right consistency (sand castle) there shouldn't be any problems. I know you said you want to have cocofiber on one side, sand on another, and then a mix ...

Re: EcoEarth question
I use dechlorinated salt water. Room temp water seems fine, not hot or anything. I haven't had any issues.
