Re: UTH overlapping substrate

Definitely! Mine can dig down on one end of the tank and pop up at the other - that's a 4 foot long journey. In my experience they never dig down and stay in one spot; they like to travel, even if it isn't super far.

Re: UTH overlapping substrate

I wouldn't worry too much. My UTH in the 55 goes below the sub a little bit as well and dries it out, but I give it a heavy misting every few days and it keeps it moist enough. Assuming your substrate is deep enough, the crabs shouldn't be hanging out in the top couple of inches to molt. Are you sur...

Re: Petco's sales tax policy

Yep, my Petco does the same thing. Aggravating since I didn't know ahead of time when I bought my 40B, but I figured I still got a good deal on it.

Re: Won't stick!

I'll second the aluminum tape. It's what's held up my Ultratherm on the 55 for over a year. Regular electrical tape doesn't stick very long or very well, in my experience.

Re: Mice

I thought he'd actually gotten rid of them, then I found them in his underwear drawer a few weeks ago. Not where I would want to keep a prized childhood toy, but whatever. I don't think I was ever super attached to any particular toy. I was always more into books, since I'm a super nerd. Guess...

Re: 55 gallon redo

Looks good! I have that same hanging coconut and use it as a moss pit; the crabs love it.

Love the kitty helper! I can't mess around in either of my tanks without a couple cats supervising.

Re: Mice

You can tell Mousey has been well-loved! I wish I still had some of my stuffed animals. My husband has 2 stuffed lambs (his "lambies") that he's had for 30+ years. I asked him if our son can play with them when he's born, and he looked absolutely horrified at the suggestion.

Re: HCP favorite food?

Mine have had pretty much everything they sell at one point or another. Really, the only things they DON'T like are the meal deal and chicken/turkey pot pie. The surf n turf protein mix is really popular, and I always have their mineral blend on hand as a supplement. The basic diet is good since it ...

Re: humidity problem?

Is your hygrometer calibrated? I'd double check that just to make sure your reading is accurate. Instructions are here: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=92540 Depending on where you live, this time of year it can be a struggle to maintain humidity since it's soooo dry in p...

Re: Lonely Crab?

It's hard to say what the problem could be. To me, a very active crab is a stressed crab - most of mine just hang out in one place all day and only leave to eat/drink and that's normal. As long as he's eating and such, I'd try not to worry and just keep an eye on him. It's always possible he's lonel...

Re: Heating Issues

People have good luck with Acurite digital thermometer/hygrometer combo that costs about $10 from Walmart or Amazon. Whatever you get, the hygrometer will need calibrated to make sure you're getting an accurate reading. Check our reptilebasics.com for Ultratherm sizes/prices. If you get one that cov...

Re: Heating Issues

If you want to get good heat, most pet store UTHs don't work. The recommended brand is Ultratherm, which can only be bought online, but they're relatively inexpensive and do a great job. They can also be safely insulated to boost temps more. You would want the biggest size that fits on the back of y...
