Re: What are your crabs up to?

I just spied on my crabs to see if they're doing anything interesting, and...nope! http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/21/b9dda287b1b09a0a4e493a9988b30dfa.jpg Biggie is just chilling on the driftwood. He was the 4th crab I got, and only because I was hormonal and cried since his shell was too sm...

Re: Fresh / Salt water question

I would definitely get Instant Ocean instead of the All Living Things. Most items marketed for hermit crabs are junk, and I don't think that will offer the various minerals, etc. that a marine grade salt will. To keep your substrate moist after the initial soaking when you set up, use fresh water. I...

Re: Need ideas/help for more humidity using a ceramic heat l

Have you tried a moss pit? That helps some people boost the humidity. :) definitely cover the screen with saran wrap or foil; it'll help trap the humidity. Just leave a little area open for air flow. You can always buy a humidifier designed for home use - I use a Crane ultrasonic cool mist one. I ru...

Re: How doI:Make Levels safely

100% silicone is safe, but with the odor, etc. it puts off, it has to be allowed to cure completely before crabs can be around it - so typically, 24-36 hours.

Re: Heater Question

They're super easy to take off! Unlike a lot of the ones sold in pet stores, they don't have adhesive on the back so there isn't any gunk to deal with. I put foil over mine, and then styrofoam, and then just taped it to the back of the tank. If I ever need to take it off/move it, piece of cake. :)

Re: What are your crabs up to?

I once again only have 2 crabs up. I know a couple come up late at night, but for the most part my tank is dead quiet. I put out peanut butter and honey last night and no one touched it. They destroyed the popcorn and other stuff though. Darn crabs.

Re: What are your crabs up to?

When I was pregnant I was getting up to tinkle in the middle of the night, then go downstairs to crab watch for 20 minutes or so. Saw the most action those days.. But my husband thought I was sneaking downstairs to eat! [emoji23][emoji23] Every time I complained about my weight he was so tight lipp...

Re: Baksets?

I had a tiny basket for a shell shop, but eventually took it out because it kept molding and was hard to clean. I think other than that they're okay to use, as long as they're natural. And really, mold won't hurt them but I hate how it looks.

Re: What are your crabs up to?

I have now seen 4 crabs this evening. Progress! I admit I like scaring mine sometimes...the way they freeze, then sloooowly back up, and then run for their lives. Or when I pick one up and he pops out and goes "Hi!" and then "AHHH!" and sucks back in, and then comes back out and goes "Hi!" and...

Re: What are your crabs up to?

My crabs are boring..they're too busy tunneling. I just glanced in the tank and saw 1 crab, and that's only because he's underground and made a window. LOL. I'm sure I'll see a few later after I feed them, but for now they're all hiding.

Re: Anything to keep my 10gal heated? And humid?

I would ditch the sponge - most of us don't use them because they'll harbor bacteria and are just a pain. A cheap, easy way to boost your humidity is to get a moss pit :) You can use a shower caddy or any small container, and fill it with moist moss - most kinds are safe, as long as they're not dyed...

Re: Wanting to set up a colony tank

Nope, not really. There's no set number of how many you can fit in a tank, honestly. Most of us on here of the opinion that the bigger the tank the better - if you think about it, every single crab someone owns was wild at one point, and they've been taken from walking miles each day to being confin...

Re: Wanting to set up a colony tank

In general, most crabs get along fine if they have proper conditions, good food, plenty of shells to change to, etc. If you're mixing different species, you'll want at least 2-3 of the same type so they'll have a 'species buddy.' Most commercial foods aren't healthy for them at all. You can feed the...

Re: What are your crabs up to?

I'm interested in the shells, you think I maybe could get some too? If parker_roo doesn't want all of them, I'll let you know what's left! :) Sooo today my crabs have mostly been extremely boring. I have one in iso, and I think he's just about ready to go back to the main tank. His iso tank was a l...

Re: New crab owner with a few questions

Cute crabs! Is that calci-sand on the right side of the tank? If so, I would really suggest replacing it with playsand :) The calci-sand isn't good for crabbies - when moistened to the proper consistency for them to dig in, it clumps up and if it gets in their shell can actually hurt them! Plus they...
