100% silicone is safe, but with the odor, etc. it puts off, it has to be allowed to cure completely before crabs can be around it - so typically, 24-36 hours.

They're super easy to take off! Unlike a lot of the ones sold in pet stores, they don't have adhesive on the back so there isn't any gunk to deal with. I put foil over mine, and then styrofoam, and then just taped it to the back of the tank. If I ever need to take it off/move it, piece of cake.
