Re: Crabbing Smells: Is there anything I can do?
This post was made almost two years ago, it is unlikely that they would still be dealing with bad smells. It’s true that this is an older post but we do have the keyword search function and people can obtain a lot of useful information from them. Someone else who is having this issue may benefit fr...

Re: Do Hermit Crabs Need Holes In Transportation Containers?
Not really. I transport with tupperware for long trips or a large kritter keeper with saran wrap around the lid to keep as much humidity in as possible.
If you’re on a long long trip just crack the lid open once in a while if you are worried about oxygen.

Re: trust
As soon as I stopped doing that he popped his eyes back up. I was assuming it was a sign of relaxation. Sort of like when they sit half in and out of their shell with their eyes down in a resting position. Eddie used to do that a lot. I know Eddie has to be stressed only having the one leg. I put f...

Re: trust
From what I understand when they drop their eyes down and hold them down it’s a sign of stress or illness. In the past, we’ve discussed that when crabs aren’t moving and have their eyes lowered it can signify that they are experiencing PPS symptoms.

Re: Play Sand Brands?
Any silica based sand that has been washed and screened and says that it is safe for kids should be fine.

Re: Please Help. Crab fight aftermath and aggression.
I’m sorry, I believe I was a bit unclear with my words. Whenever I left him he was completely buried (I could only see the top of his shell) so I am assuming it wasn’t a surface molt. However, I want st home to witness it so I can’t be sure. He has recovered from molting so I am now asking guidance...

It really doesn’t matter to me. They can change gender anyway. *shrug*

Re: Commercial food?
Go to Walmart to the fish section and get some little containers of dried shrimp, and bloodworms. You can feed them any meat that you eat as long as it hasn’t been seasoned with unsafe items, cured, or smoked. (So no sausages or lunch meats or hot dogs.) They really do need a variety of protein and ...

Re: Would stinky food cause crabs uncomfort?
I was just thinking, when some food I feed like fresh raw seafood or meats start to go bad after a day and begin to smell, do the crabs get bothered by it? No. They are scavengers and their systems are designed to process decaying organic matter. Strong smells often attract them to foods rather tha...

Re: Buried crab
They backfill their holes so your crab could be anywhere underground. Just leave it be.

Re: 3D Printed Hermit Crab Accessories?
If hermit crabs are unable to modify these, it is unlikely they would use them when given the option of choosing between natural or 3D printed. They secrete a substance to melt the inner whorls of their shell and they also pick at them to accommodate their eyestalks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Home Sweet Home?
that's too bad. But what if they were just shipped off the coast of Florida and you wanted to take them back home? I probably wouldn't buy them for that purpose, but I was just wandering if that would work. Hermit crabs in Florida aren’t really a part of the industry afaik. They are collected from ...

Re: trust
They’re prey animals. Their instinct is to hide when something larger than they are comes around. I’d recommend leaving them alone and not trying to handle them, in my opinion this causes unnecessary stress. Hermit crabs do not “bond” with their owners like dogs or cats do. They don’t have the neuro...

Re: Can I find wild hermit crabs here?
I wanted to see where hermit crabs naturally thrive so I could replicate their habitiat in my crabitat. But thanks for the answers! Okay but we would have had different answers for you if you’d asked where their habitats were and what conditions were like there. The coenobita species are from tropi...

Re: Can I find wild hermit crabs here?
I'm visiting Lake Michigan over summer, does anyone know if there are hermit crabs there? If so, where is the best place to find one? As in you want to take wild animals out of their natural habitat to take home and keep as a pet? I don’t believe there are any marine hermit crabs in the Lake Michig...
