Shy
We got our 4 yesterday, and once in the tank they all hid right away. I think 2 of them might have dug down. This morning I went to look in on them, and I see one of them eating. As soon as she saw me though, she ran and "hid." I guess she doesn't like to be watched while eating.

Re: We've got our crabbies
More pics for sure! I just figured, much to my daughter's dismay, I should get them settled in asap. Belle is the only one exploring so far, and she seems to enjoy climbing over everything and everyone. I think she and Jasmine are probably considered to be "small", although I haven't measured them y...

Re: We've got our crabbies
They've had their bath, and are in their tanks! One of them, Teeny, has not come out of his shell at all. I think it's too big for him. Teeny http://i.imgur.com/eQzfEBe.jpg Jasmine and Belle are in the top left corner, Sebastian is the middle-ish one, and Teeny is on the right. http://i.imgur.com/Qu...

We've got our crabbies
We finally got our crabbies - 4 little guys. Based on our short look over in the pet store I think one of them is too little for his (not gendered) shell. He was completely in his shell, hidden. I almost couldn't tell there was a crab in it! I'll try to get some good pictures after we get them home ...

Re: Mold on coco-hut
I put it back only to notice mold on my castle. Guess it's soaking overnight in salt water. We're leaving tomorrow to get the crabs, and I want everything perfect. I'm not sure how to lower my humidity without making it tank. It was a fine line between barely 70% and now 90%

Mold on coco-hut
As I was checking the crabitat today (we get the crabs tomorrow) I noticed mold on and in the coconut hidey hut. Is there anyway to clean it and return it to the crabitat safely?

Re: First foods
After reading through all the forums here, I decided to go for protein, calcium, and the nutritive properties of honey because not only are they likely in less than ideal conditions and stressed, there's a 2.5 hour car ride to get home after getting them. The only fruit I have is some frozen bananas...

First foods
What were the first foods you offered your hermies? I'm an over thinker, and want everything to be perfect. I'm thinking honey in an eggshell, some hemp seed (I'm assuming it's safe since the list mentions hemp meal), some greens, ground beef, and sunflower butter (it has no preservatives and ...

Re: what to do when a hermit crab pinches you
I imagine they do, but I figured smaller pinchers means smaller pain. My sister had a huge crab about 10 years ago and the thing frightened me so bad I said I'd never get one.

Re: what to do when a hermit crab pinches you
This is exactly why I'm getting small ones. I'm scared to death of being pinched!

Re: Woo-hoo Finally!
We knew about a month in advance we were getting them for my daughter's 5th birthday. We had an incident a couple years ago with fish not surviving - I knew nothing about tank cycling, etc. I showed my daughter a picture of a hermit crab and she says they're the cutest things ever, so we started on ...

Woo-hoo Finally!
After a couple weeks of tweaking everything in my (daughter's) crabitat, we finally have proper conditions! Temperature in the middle of the tat is 80 degrees daytime, 75 nighttime. Humidity is 85% as long as I have a wet towel over the lid, 65-70% without it. I have an Ultratherm heater on...

Re: Heat variables in tank
The back of the tank is reading at 90 degrees with 40-50% humidity, and the front says 70 degrees with 90% humidity. It's only a 20 gallon tall, how can that much variation exist in such a small space?

Re: Heat variables in tank
It's up a couple more degrees now, in the back only, but now the humidity in the back is shot-40%. I have pools on the side with the zoomed heater and a moss pit on the front. The front of the tank reads 90% humidity, but still only 70 degrees. Should I just expect the humidity to be low where the h...
