Re: Artemis, Day 14 carrying eggs

Goodness me you are doing really well. Keep on doing what you are doing. Soon you will be advising all the rest of us who have been lucky enough to raise a couple of babies.
Must chat with you about what you are feeding.

Re: Baby hermit crabs

Don't worry. Even with best condition and thousands of larvae only a few hundred will reach the stage of megalopa. And then they will eat each other, till there are some left. So, you are very lucky, if you even have some at the end, in shells and then at land. Oh ok thank you I had thousands of zo...

Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread

Hey, I had some last year. They even changed to megalopa. Unfortunately they died, before they took shells. But you are right, is was a long time since the last larvae. :? I advanced the theory, that breeding has something to do with the weather, especially areas of high pressure. Since December 20...

Re: Danys ?-Coenobita-breeding-thread

naalide may I ask if the water in the transition tank is in a container or all over the bottom of the tank with deeper sand on the beach part? Love your rocks for them to climb up and out on. That's where I lost a heap on my first attempt as they couldn't (didn't) get out of the water.

Re: Artemis, Day 14 carrying eggs

I got my teeny tiny shells from bird shell grit (the stuff they put in bird cages for them to eat to help digest stuff.) they worked well for my Aussie crabs. A magnifying glass and a pin (to clean out the openings) were very very handy.

Edit that shell change notification. It is actually V who has changed shells not Monster. Think V is a boy.

Monster has changed shells. She had been in the big ridged one since Feb so it’s good to see a change.

I’m happy with 3. Eventually things will get crowded if I keep doing this. [emoji23]

Re: Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017

Bought 2 new males on Wednesday. They are beautiful crabs. BUT Mango the biggest current resident in the tat has been keeping Milo the bigger of the males in his place. Also tonight I saw her give a very strong leg flick to Pepper the smaller of the males when he tried to approach the food dish she ...

Re: Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017

The 4 empty shells goes with the 8 (I thought) I put in from transition tank. So out of thousands of zoea, hundreds of megalopa, dozens of first crabs I’ve ended up with 3 nearly 2 years on. [emoji7]

Pretty sure Monster is female and V is male but couldn’t get Dotti to come out far enough.

Re: Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017

Confirmed only 3 survivors. They were all up so I shifted them to the iso tank I’d set up for my 2 new males (now in main adult tank) and emptied the juvenile tank. All I found was 4 little shells one little bit of toe and one bigger exe limb that can only have come from my adults before I moved the...
