Re: Mass Crab Death

@IBlab_Crab, its been common knowledge in the crabbing community for as long as I can remember and like wodesorel pointed out there has been research and studies done on it as well as lots of anecdotal evidence from crabbers across the last couple of decades. I rotate out powdered foods on a daily b...

Re: Upgraded my male halfmoon betta's aquarium.

I've done the no salt method for years before I learned through lots of research that it should be done for newly purchased betta's as that is when they are most likely to be sick from poor store conditions and I have seen betta's being kept in some really nasty water in those little cups which I ab...

Re: humidity in my 40 gallon

Yeah I have a heat lamp with a sixty watt Infrared bulb on my forty gallon breeder and the gauge closest to the lamp always reads a lower humidity than the other gauge on cool end so yes its your lamps they are literally sucking the humidity right out of the enclosure.

Re: Live oak okay?

@wodesorel, over at the old LHC forums for years we always advocated soaking anything high in tannins to remove them or diminish them before putting those items in the enclosure with the crabs, I believe the topic started as a do I need to soak acorns before giving them to my crabs and the answer wa...

Re: Cool video of wild PP chain shell swap.

Yeah I kind of stumbled upon this video and just had to share it because it shows something happening in the wild that I have only read about before. On summer nights in the Caribbean you can hear thousands of these crabs doing this and it supposedly sounds like rain because of all the shells bumpin...

Re: Mass Crab Death

One thing to add hermitcrabs are biologically pre-programmed to avoid eating foods that they have previously smelled or tasted for up to forty-eight hours this is ensure that they get a varied and nutritional diet in the wild so offering the same food every day is actually doing them a great disserv...

Re: supplement dish and water question

I just use powdered cuttlebone mixed with white calci-sand and crushed egg shell and my group seems to love this mix. I also keep a sizable chunk of cuttlebone in the tat at all times so that the crabs can nibble on that if they feel like which they often do. Putting crushed coral or dolomite in the...

Re: Live oak okay?

The leaves are fine as long as they are from an untreated tree. The acorns and wood including the bark of oak tree's should not be given to the crabs as they contain a toxic level of tannic acid or tannin's which have been directly linked to cattle poisoning as the high concentration of the tannic a...

Re: What glue is safe?

Aquarium grade silicone is really the only hermitcrab safe adhesive, hot melt adhesives or hot glues in the urban parliament are generally considered to be non-toxic but don't hold up well under the high heat and humidity of our enclosures like hermitcrabdc stated. There are differing grades of hot ...

Re: Cleaning question

I've always kept back some of the old substrate to seed the new with as it helps to prevent sterility shock, if you think about like keeping a fish tank cycled by always having some cultured media on hand whether in the filter or physical objects in the tank then substrate in a hermitcrab tank can b...

Re: Tank is now flooding..

I've got a mix of ee and play sand, heavy on the play sand it makes up two thirds of the mix and it took me forever to find the right ratio of ee to play sand so that I got that nice sandcastle consistency to the mix. The first time I used ee I made the mistake of hydrating the bricks in a bucket th...

Re: Tank is now flooding..

With that much water accumulation on the bottom it sound like your either overdoing it with the spraying, the dishes have a slow leak or the crabs are dumping too much water which can be caused because they are purposefully digging right next to the dishes mounding the substrate into them which will...

I love goin...

Re: Upgrading to 40 gal. questions.

@shanedaman112, I've got a forty breeder and have done the whole filtered two gallon pool before and to be honest the filters don't last long because of all the sand and other debris that the crabs drag into the water with them you'll be doing like JMT and I have done and be replacing the whole filt...
