New crabs not coming out of shell?
They are new, that's all. It's like your first day at school. Everything is big and bright and NEW! They just need a little time to de stress and get used to you. My general rule for all new crabs is hands off completely for the first month. Edit: Also, can you tell us a little bit more about your t...

Re: Molting Question
Keep in mind that molted and weak crabs smell really really yummy to other crabs. Just because he is in a shell that the others "don't want" does not necessarily mean he's safe. He needs to be completely isolated from other crabs untill he has healed compleatly. Another tank would be ideal, but if s...

Re: Insulating and warmth
The problem with the....for lack of a better term....squishy...kind of like padded rubber....UTH's is that they can overheat, melt, even catch fire or crack your tank if they are insulated. This is what was explained to me by an electrician friend of mine e anyhow. Now I may be wrong, maybe another ...

Re: Insulating and warmth
Ahh. As far as I know, you can't insulate those at all. One thing I did was cut a long skinny piece of foil and wrapped it around the tank, up to the line of substrate. I can easily move it, to check on the sub to see if flooded ect. But it helps trap heat in the sub, since I did so, my tank gained ...

Re: Green Algae thingy on shells.
Thanks everybody. I did not boil it but soak in boiled water with sea salt. Maybe I didn't notice it until now. My substrate is hermit crab sand and plantation soil. Humidity percentage not very sure but I had sea sponge in the habitat and I am living in topical country the weather here is super hu...

Re: One hermit crab
I can understand that. My best suggestion is to sit down with them and show them all of the research you have been doing on crab care. They may be more "open" to the idea.

One hermit crab
All creatures need to be able to interact with other creatures. Even solitary creatures who shun others of the same species still interact with other species in day to day life. Hermit Crabs are accustomed to living large colonies in the wild and ALL commercially sold crabs come from the wild. My ow...

Re: Just wanted to introduce myself
Hi! Welcome to HCA. We have lots and lots of new information on the stickies if you want to brush up. I recently joined the forum my self even though I have been "crabbing" for a long time and boy have I learned a lot. Especially about how much room each crab needs. There is a sticky in the crabitat...

Re: A couple of questions
You will need to purchase a thermostat separately of you find yourself in need of one. They normally run $30-$40.

Re: pete moss?
Crabs need to be able to dig and tunnel to create cave that will hold shape so that they can feel safe and secure to molt. Since Peat Moss will collapse super easy, I am going to say that it is not okay as a substrate. PlaySand/EE mixed 5:1 is really the want to go. Some do will with all PlaySand th...
