Re: CrabStreet Journal info inaccurate?

When you do the chopstick test you pull it back out and if the hole doesn’t keep it’s shape it’s too dry, if it fills with water it’s too wet. If it just holds the shape it’s perfect. :)

Elvis (finally) changed shells!

Ecuadorians really are stubborn! I believe she was in her previous one for 2 years. I was shocked when my mom sent me this picture showing she finally switched! Aaaand it wasn’t any of the new shells I bought for her. I think a purple pincher was in this one at some point. Oh well, I’m glad she’s ha...

Re: New crab owner substrate question: adding salt instead of saltwater?

I wouldn’t, someone did this a few years ago and it actually burned the crabbies because you can’t really make sure you get the proper dilution of substrate + water to salt. I would say you can maybe leave the lid off for a few days (if you can wait) so it dries back up and you can mist with saltwat...

Re: Shells in bowl vs scattered

It’s your choice really! I keep mine in a bin for the most part to keep them from being buried in the sand. I do have some on the substrate though.

Re: Tap Water vs. Distilled vs. Spring

They both produce purified water, but utilize different routes to get there! Here’s a more in-depth description if you’re curious:

Re: Can a rescued cannibal crab be "rehabilitated"?

Based on observation I’d say about 80% of the time hermit crabs will attack other crabs when something is off care-wise. I’d guess that when he was being shipped he wasn’t offered many (if any) food options. Once he molts I’m sure things will be fine. :) EDIT: Fruits contain sugars, which can give h...

Re: Seeking recommendations: thermostat/heat regulator

I really enjoy this one on Amazon! It’s pretty cheap for a digital thermostat which is great! I have an insulated Ultratherm UTH hooked up to the thermostat and have it set to 84 degrees. It turns the heat mat off when it hits 84 degrees F and turns on when it drops to 82 degrees F. Without it my ta...

Re: Tap Water vs. Distilled vs. Spring

I just want to back up that you should be treating bottled water, with the exception of distilled water. It’s pure H2O with all the nutrients removed. I prefer to use Prime and tap water because it’s less expensive in the long run.

Re: Hamster wheels

I use command hooks to hang mine upside down like this: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190831/7249c6e064cf4ae7b691d098082fd5db.jpg I’m not too concerned about the metal because most of it is coated in paint, and I’m not directly spraying the wheel with water. Metal itself isn’t harmful to the cr...

Re: Prime and other questions

Mine would swim more often when I had the water dishes up against the side of the glass with the Ultratherm on it. I had to move the bowls back away from the heater due to ease of access. When I upgrade I’ll definitely be decorating so I can put them where they can be heated, and eventually I plan o...

Re: Tiny Tiny Mites

They’re food mites, pretty harmless but can gross us (the humans) out. They naturally live in homes so it’s likely they’ll come back after getting rid of them. EDIT: They like the crab tank because it’s humid and warm. I find adding springtails and/or isopods helps keep their numbers at bay by creat...

Re: Coffee grounds / tea leaves

I’ve heard of people offering used coffee grounds, it’s safe. As for tea, I’ve heard of people offering green tea brewed and dry. Not sure on the other ones though.
