Re: Bacteria bloom

Mold isn’t a bacterial bloom. :) Bacterial blooms are caused by the build up of anaerobic bacteria in the bottom of the substrate. You can just remove the mold yourself, it’s not harmful to the crabs but can be for humans.

Re: Glass Shell

My crabs are great at falling from the support beam in the middle of the tank, so I would be worried about the glass shell breaking. I have considered getting one just to put on a shelf in my room, however.

Re: Second level material help?

Many people have used Great Stuff foam covered in 100% Silicone for backgrounds in crab tanks. :) One of the admins worked with making a cement background and could probably explain that better than I could. @aussiejjdude

Re: Green tea

Based on past discussions I believe it is fine. I remember lots of people feeding their hermit crabs non caffeinated green tea, dry or brewed. And jasmine flowers are safe. :)

Re: Beans

I would personally cook, or at least soak them before serving, they’re very hard when dry! You can do this by rinsing the beans, then soaking them overnight (4 cups of water per cup of beans works well). You’ll then want to drain them and throw out the water they soaked in. If you want to serve them...

Re: Question for anyone who has dug out a molter... please !

Is everything alright? Healing foods are those such as honey, worm castings, cuttlebone, and peanut butter (no salt). I think for your situation digging would be a good idea. I usually work at an angle when digging (I had to do this due to a bacterial bloom before) and if I find a molter I scoop the...

Re: Brutus, the guard over all the crab shells! Help!

Mine do this as well, as far as I can tell it’s not a behavior to be concerned by. :)

EDIT - If I do worry, I usually take a long object like a pencil and tap the offender on the back of the shell. This puts them in defense mode.

Re: Hermits eating dog food?

I also agree with curlysister, I did some research not too long ago and it turns out they aren’t required to list ethoxyquin in the ingredients of the dog food if the ethoxyquin is in a component already.

Re: What's harmful to giant African millipedes?

Actually giant African millipedes are legal in the United States, as long as they’re already being kept as pets here. It’s only illegal to import them due to the mites that naturally live on them, as the mites are a threat to crops. You’re legally allowed to own one that is the offspring of a millip...

Re: New crabitat new owner

EE tends to have an earthy smell. Smells you need to be worried about are a sulfur or rotting egg smell (indicates a bacterial bloom), and the dead fish smell (indicates a dead crab). Otherwise it’s typically pretty normal and nothing to be concerned about, unless it’s a chemical smell in which case...
