Re: Owning Isopods - US Legality Update

Ah, so much work. I got my guys on Amazon. Wonder why they're not cracking down on them. @_@ Though it sounds like if the breeder was licensed to ship to all states then I'm fine. But I think I'll apply just in case. Once my account gets approved I have to apply for all 23 species I own.... thankfu...

Re: Ultratherm for 20 gal. Long

A good idea may be to go ahead and get the Ultratherm (especially since you’ll probably need it in Winter), and get a thermostat to hook it up to. Thermostats help by turning the heat mat on when it’s too cold, and turn it off when it’s too hot. The one I use is from Amazon and is for germinating se...

Re: Thermometer Hygrometer Question

I personally use this thermometer/hygrometer from ReptileBasics - it holds up really well and I don’t have to have the digital readout in the tank, which is great for aesthetics. :)

Re: Do I need to soften "hard" foods?

I’m a vegetarian - so I usually just give the crabs the beans I soften for myself. :)

Re: Tank Build Diary

Hi! I have a 37 gallon tank for my adult crabs, the tank measures 30” long by 12.5” deep by 24” tall. I use the 23” by 11” Ultratherm from ReptileBasics to heat the crabitat, and it works very well! (Sometimes too well, so now its on a thermostat.) I have 12” of substrate in the tank so I don’t have...

Owning Isopods - US Legality Update

Hello everyone! If you know anything about me, I’m also active in the isopod hobby as well as the hermit crab hobby. There’s a change in legality as far as owning, selling, and trading isopods goes so I thought it would be a good idea to share a breakdown video here. It’s 20-ish minutes but it’s ver...

Xeno and I have been tossing around the idea of trying to sell some of the easier things we make. Cubes, Acurite holders, decorated terracotta pots, hemp and jute ropes.
OMG, please?? I really want a cube.

Re: Bacteria bloom

If you mix your substrate with salt water initially it will help prevent mold. :)

Re: Changing sub

I don’t change mine, I try to stir it if I catch a timeframe where everyone’s up. Only time I’ve changed it recently is when I had a bacterial bloom within the past two years.

Steer clear of copper sulfate, ethoxyquin, and BHT for sure!

Re: Hide away ideas please!

For hides you could make your own coconut hides! Here’s a video of someone making one on Youtube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MKsJOAZUS20
You could also take a piece of Tupperware and turn it upside down. Cut a door and use 100% silicone to attach pebbles to make a rock cave!

Re: Bacteria bloom

Mold isn’t a bacterial bloom. :) Bacterial blooms are caused by the build up of anaerobic bacteria in the bottom of the substrate. You can just remove the mold yourself, it’s not harmful to the crabs but can be for humans.

Re: Glass Shell

My crabs are great at falling from the support beam in the middle of the tank, so I would be worried about the glass shell breaking. I have considered getting one just to put on a shelf in my room, however.
