Re: What am I doing wrong with new crabs?!

Heya, I'm late to the party, but just wanted to suggest that you hold off on getting more crabs for a bit. Heres why: a 29 gal is great initially, but they will all (hopefully!) grow - and the more crabs you have, the sooner you will need an upgrade. Besides which a 29 gal is likely a wee bit crampe...

Re: Aggressive Crab

Okay, if you haven't yet tried adding him to the 55 colony, perhaps that would be a good idea - he may react differently in a tank with hides & decor than he does in a more open setting (like the playpen - I sort of assume you mean a literal playpen?). When an animal enters a space with other conspe...

That's excellent! They'll always appreciate variety. :D

Re: Aggressive Crab

Ooh, yeah - that might not be great. Maybe we can figure out a way to get him to chill. Quick questions, just to get an idea of your tat: how many crabs? what size is your tank? how many hides do you have? What proteins do you offer & how often? Also @wodesorel or @GotButterflies, does that seem lik...

Re: Minnows

Really, any fresh fish from the grocery store or even thawed from frozen will provide the exact same nutritional value as a fish you kill. There isn't any added value to this way of feeding that I can think of.

Re: Impossibly tiny rescue turtle!

I clearly don't spend enough time looking at turtles, because he looks the same to me in both sets of pictures (that is to say, adorable). It's like when you first start crabbing, and all species look the same to you*. What sort of tell-tale signs do you look for in turtles? * but a year later it's ...

Re: Do crab apple shoots make good crabitat material?

Oh, no, you did all that work - don't tear it apart!

Knit is great! I'm sure your crabs love it! I just suggested crochet because it's fast & easy.... and if even I can pick it up, anyone can (I can't knit!).

Re: Aggressive Crab

Did you try dipping him in the fw dish before adding him back to the colony? How does his agression manifest? What exactly is his behaviour towards other crabbos? A certain amount of dominance jockeying can be normal, as the crabs figure out their pecking order. Certain behaviours, like reaching int...

Byzantine royalty

I don't have any cobalt crabs to show off, but I did want to post the purple-y-est of my recenter moults. (My camera isn't great though, and it's not doing either justice. This is why I don't post many pictures.) Probably Chandra or Jace, but I can't be sure at all. https://78.media.tumblr.com/f756a...

Re: 1 up 1 down?

I kinda keep a log - with 4 out of 8 being very close in size & most of them down throughout May an April, my note book has a lot of (??) next to the names written in. So much for record keeping.

Mine seem pretty absorbed by their own business... that wheel isn't gonna walk itself.

Re: Do crab apple shoots make good crabitat material?

Have you considered crochet? It's fast & works well with jute. I taught myself from a YouTube tutorial so I could make a crab wall climb.

Re: Minnows

I would guess that the volume of a commercial catch precludes best practice in terms of humane euthanasia. They don't allow fish to suffocate because it's kinder, rather because the longer the fish is alive, the fresher it will be at market. I'd personally choose a method that was quick in order to ...

Re: Crabitote

I'd try Home Depot, if you have one near you. I think you can usually check online to see whether a specific location carries the size you want - though sometimes the website site can be incorrect.

Re: Minnows

Fish should be killed humanely, not left to slowly suffocate. Suffocation is slow and painful. You can use a knife to cut its head off, I suppose. Pet fish should be euthanized using clove oil added to the water (not in the main tank, obviously! - use a container with tank water in it) but I assume ...
