And I'd just add, if it hadn't been covered, that the sand you want is play sand (silica sand) that you can buy in big bags from a harware type store. Petstores mostly sell calcium carbonate sand, which isn't recommended at all (after being moistened it can then harden in clumps as it dries - potent...

Re: Saved 9 jumbos this weekend

I've found Richards shells often stocks larger openings: mention that they're for hermits and let him know what size you're looking for (I think his measurements tend to run a wee bit large, but not by much). Shells with carved stripes & pearlized shells are popular because they're lighter. Also wan...

Re: My Incandescant Bulb

If your house is really :? dry (mine gets dessert-levels of arid with the rads on it the winter) heaters can be really drying - especially (but not only) in smaller tanks. What methods are you using to maintain moisture right now? A bubbler in a deep freshwater pool can often be a big help. Though d...

Re: Halloween Crab care and trust issues

If they require a larger tank than you have (as mentioned by wodesorel above) then you wouldn't want to add another crab until you have more space for them. Crowding even the chillest of animals can lead to agression. Is the species Grecarcinus quadratus? (I you're unsure just google the name & comp...

Dechlorinator used with tap water is cheaper in the long run. And I can't really think of any benefit to using bottled water.

Would depend on how close you mean to place it, I would think? Certainly don't have it touching.

Re: Crab Without Shell Through Glass View!

Older crabs (of all sorts) are more likely to die during molts because molting takes up more energy in larger animals & so they will often eventually reach a size where they just don't have the reserves necessary to pull it off any more. That may have been what the post you read was getting at??

Re: Double-dish bubbler pics, yo!

You put the lid on top of the bowl with water and stones? What is the bottom bowl with rocks for? is this the fresh water pool?? That's just how I have my pools set up... I used stones glued together (with aquarium safe silicon) as a ramp out of the pool. The loose stones in the bottom of the other...

Re: How long do you leave your pad heater on or when?

I'd tend to say leave it on. Monitor the temp as closely as is practical for a few days to see where the pad brings it up to & then maybe consider getting a thermostat to shut it off if it gets too high (most likely not an issue unless your house is regularly in the 80's though, tbh... I only need a...
