Re: Many lost limbs on one side from unsuccessful molt

When i checked on her this morning, she was being really still, so that's worrying, but then Bro had just surface molted, and Dwebble was going after his shell! There were never even signs he was ready to molt! Blech, the brats were more cooperative before the move.

Re: Many lost limbs on one side from unsuccessful molt

This is like day 4 of things going south for her noticeably. I don't have much sub because most of it was flooded and discarded when i moved. She then went into a surface molt, but had a bottle. If she lost the legs the same day as the molt, then she lost them 7-31, more or less, but i only noticed ...

Re: Many lost limbs on one side from unsuccessful molt

The fun bit is gonna be increasing the sub inch by inch while tending for her and being aware of crabs who are either molting or likely destressing. Do i just soak the end of the q tip in honey and sick the dry end in the sub, or actually feed it to her?

Re: Many lost limbs on one side from unsuccessful molt

Alas, but unless just limbs can stink up a tank, I believe I am now down a hermit crab :( I'll know more definitively in the morning (or would mourning be more fitting?). This was not for lack of trying! Just lack of experience, and great stress for a molt. I will be extra diligent in wringing out e...

Many lost limbs on one side from unsuccessful molt

Due to a mixture of possible bad care from me, moving, and interactions with the other crabs, my surface molter straw seems to have lost many of the limbs on her left side, i think including possibly her big claw. This may explain why she hasn't eaten all of her old exo. I know crabs are resilient a...

Do crabs change color while the new exo hardens?

See topic. I have a straw who is finishing a surface molt, but is more pink than red. Is this a possible sign of there not being enough kerotene in her diet, or will she likely become more red in a few days? If it's of relevance, she shed her old exo about a week ago and has only eaten part of it, t...

Mass Surfacing During Thunderstorm?

Has anyone else noticed a mass surfacing during a thunderstorm? There's a pretty hefty storm moving through here, and while I did only have one above ground before it, now most of them are above ground

Re: Adding Substrate with a Surface Molter?

Well, my lil girl seems to be able to instinctively flinch any time i go to mist the inner side of the bottle protecting her from everyone else, so that makes me hopeful. I'm still nervous, though. Do their colors get more vibrant later on into molting? She's a straw and still looks rather pink, but...

Re: Adding Substrate with a Surface Molter?

When i checked this morning, Ann had been a strong girl overnight and partly reshelled herself! She also had munched on much of her old exo, so now I'm less worried than i was last night

Re: What are your crabs up to?

One of my crabs is surface molting, and while it's incredibly stressful for both of us, it got better last night. When i got home from work, she was out of her shell completely as far as i could tell. This morning she was mostly black in her shell!! I'll still be glad when this process is done

Re: Adding Substrate with a Surface Molter?

While i did use dcmsw, it smelled of rotten eggs. I knew right away i had no choice but to start over, I'm just unsure of timing. The top few inches smelled fine, so currently their tank is about an inch and a bag of ee's worth of sub. The bricks are coming tomorrow, so my dilemma becomes making it ...

Re: Adding Substrate with a Surface Molter?

Basic timeline: Pre-molt -> i moved and discovered the flooding from improper mixing -> added what sub i could for initial setup -> surface molt
I have 8 total crabs, and the sub is straight ee

Adding Substrate with a Surface Molter?

Can this be safely done? After putting Ann through the stress of molting just after moving (literally the day after), i don't want to accidentally kill her adding more sub. When i was cleaning out the tank, it turns out i didn't wring out the sub enough, and it smelled horrible for the bottom 4-5". ...

Re: adding more substrate w/ molting crab

Does this change at all if a crab is surface molting? I just moved, and it turned out the bottom half of my old sub was going bad. However, before i could get more new sub, she she'd her exo. Can i add sub around the bottle until she's surface ready, or just wait to add any at all?

I have a 20 gallon long filled 3/4 of the way with damp ee. How empty should i get it before moving?
