Re: Strange growth on crab claws?

Yes, we see the images. All I see are normal growths of setae.

Re: Affordable Humidifier!!!

Does it allow for fog density control? I’ve considered household foggers but they’re not designed for enclosures so it’s easy to output too much water.

Re: Millipede help!!!

I’ve never cared for millipedes outside of a laboratory setting, but it looks like you’re off to a good start. Their needs aren’t too difficult to meet.

Re: Food list confusion

Yeah, we’re still trying to patch up loose ends on the forum here. There’s a lot going on and we’re all volunteers with busy lives. Traditionally copper sulfate was viewed as bad, but recently I’ve started to doubt its toxicity at reasonable amounts. Fisheries, for example, supplement their crustace...

No, that’s really not out of the ordinary. I’d wait it out another few months before you start to worry.

Re: My hermit crab has red mites!!!

Oh thats amazing! Thank you so much. So Red Velvet mites do nothing to hermit crabs and I don't have to clean the tank or anything? Also the mites I saw in Salty's shell were VERY small, and some pictures on google show that some red velvet mites are not extremely small. I was SO worried about Salt...

Re: My hermit crab has red mites!!!

You wouldn’t see gill mites on a hermit crab since their gills are covered.

They sound like red velvet mites, which are small, red, native, and harmless.

Re: New Hermit Owner

Molting is the process by which hermit crabs shed their exoskeleton so they can grow. It all happens underground so it’s unlikely you’ll ever see it. As for your question, is your hermit crab still alive? They do hang out occasionally, but it can also be an indicator of passing, especially if the cr...

Re: popsicle sticks

Food-safe would be better, however others have done crab crafts with craft sticks in the past so it probably doesn’t matter.

They mold over time, though, so a soaking in saltwater may be beneficial. Note that glue doesn’t always stick well to damp wood.

Re: Difference between dried and freeze dried?

Freeze-dried foods are going to retain nutrients better than dried, but hermit crabs will eat them all the same.

Dairy products are on the safe list. They’re not very popular with crabbers but they are an option.

Re: How to know what type of wood is safe

The long stick and two white pieces are hardwood, so they’re safe although I can’t get anymore specific than that.

The others are too rotted for me to tell.

I don’t feed baby food but it’s actually somewhat popular among crabbers.

What is it? Citric acid and ascorbic acid are common and safe, but I would avoid sulfites.

Re: Mustard Seeds and Ginger?

They don’t have any potentially toxic compounds as far as I know so they should be fine, but they do have strong flavors so I don’t know if they’d like them on their own.
