How can I tell if I have mold?

Look here. Mold on the glass. I’m turning the fan back on. My tank needs air flow.

How can I tell if I have mold?

Thanks Curlysister but I was extremely slow and careful when digging. It had to be done or my tank would’ve flooded. Not sure that’s good w molting crabs but now everything is ok and I’m sure the molter is ok. And there’s no way anything can get to the wire running the fan inside the tank. Nothing w...

Re: How can I tell if I have mold?

When I first set up my tank I didn’t have anywhere to put it other than my basement which is notorious for growing mold. You can find little specs of white mold on almost anything in my basement. And there’s always a moldy or musty smell down there. I’ve tried increasing some airflow down there and ...

Substrate temperature?

Great info! I’ll ween them off the space heater keeping an eye on soil temp. As air temp is steady Edit: before bed I added a sheet of insulation board covering the entire glass on the back. Soil temp jumped up near 80!!! Over night. I turned the space heater down even more and repositioned it as I ...

Re: Substrate temperature?

Thanks aussieJJDude. Don’t think the molting crabs will be affected by a change?

Re: Substrate temperature?

Oh riniky I must’ve misread your reply. You aren’t suggesting I put heater below sub level. Your just saying raise the sub level as well as raising the ultratherm heater.

And Hermiesguardian I can certainly try to slowly change the soil temp.

Re: Substrate temperature?

Great ideas! I did want to add more as I don’t think I have enough. Only 6-7 in and two of my crabs are good size. As of now I have the space heater set on 68 and it’s automatically shutting off now. So at least that’s not 24/7 like before. Since turning it back on the soil temp has gone back up to ...

Re: Substrate temperature?

Really my only concern is that two crabs are buried and have not came up in weeks so I’m sure they are molting and I’m afraid changing a soil temperature might affect them.

Re: Substrate temperature?

Guess I will get some insulation board and cover the back and maybe sides. Again trying to eliminate using a space heater.

Re: Substrate temperature?

Thanks for replying! I will be ditching the analog gauges. Although I did calibrate it. And I’ll also be monitoring the salinity in the saltwater pool. Hehe. I go overboard sometimes but if I could figure out how to incorporate a small reef tank. Hmmm maybe not but wish I could. Also the moonglo bul...

Re: Substrate temperature?

Quick update. Air temp is 78-79 now Soil temp is 71 Not sure how air temp went up to 81 after making changes but now dropping. Maybe now that sand is cooling it’s affecting the air temp. I’ve turned the space heater back on but reduced the thermostat on it because it shouldn’t need to run 24/7 now t...

Substrate temperature?

Hi everyone here, I am somewhat new to keeping hermit crabs. I feel like part of the problem since I’ve heard they are all captured from the wild. I don’t like that idea therefore I don’t plan on ever buying more. This all stemmed from a vacation where we bought a crab. Now I’m trying to create an e...
