Gender?

This area is dedicated to the pioneers who have captive bred crabs, and for those who wish to learn more or attempt it themselves. Also for inquiring about the gender of your crabs.

It’s ok, a lot of them go unchecked because a lot of people don’t like to handle their crabs. I was calling my original 4 boys and they were all girls except for one. Luckily, the one we named Bob was the male. Lol!

I have 4 purple pinchers. Crush, Bubbles, Sheldon, Sandy, and little Angelo. And I love Jesus! He is the way, the truth and the life, and he knew what he was doing when he made hermit crabs!☺

It really doesn’t matter to me. They can change gender anyway. *shrug*

Scientific papers have documented a surprising amount of sexual fluctuation in hermits. Intersex crabs are common, and gonopores have been noted to appear and dissapear after molts.

The question then becomes are they actually changing their sex internally during molts to where it influences their reproduction, or is it just superficial external openings that can come and go.

Huh. I was aware of parthenogenesis a gyandromorphs but I never knew some animals could change their existing sex! I just googled it, apparently clownfish do it too. Man it would be cool to know if the change was complete or only superficial

That's really strange - I guess we all need to be prepared for some name changing. Maybe before you get a crab you should get a list of names to go with it - all starting with the same letter. Lol, I just figured out that my little Angelo is a girl, so now I may start calling her Angela!

Or just name them gender-neutral things. *shrug* That's what I do.
