I think one of my crabs is not a PP

Post by Smooti » Fri Jan 16, 2015 8:21 am

We have 3 hermit crabs that we got in august and just took in two more this week. When we took in the crabs, they all appeared to be purple pinchers. our smallest crab, bob, was the first to burry and has only come up a handful of times since august. He has changed shells once, but for the most part, he keeps to himself and stays buried in the sand most of the time.

Last night, when I was setting up the new tank, I got a closer look at bob and he seems to be a blue-ish purple color- completely different looking than the other crabs. his big claw is actually smaller proportionally than the other crabs' claws. He is still pretty teeny though, and honestly might be considered micro. he is smaller than my finger nail and I wear a size 4 ring.

I'll see if I can get a picture later. is it possible he is not a PP or are some PP's different colors like that?

If you can get pics we can let you know. Color alone is not a good way to determine species. Try to get pics that show the crabs eyes and BP clearly.

If you can't get a pic since he sounds so shy, try comparing these side-by-side images of different species to determine his. http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/pages/species.jpg

He looks like 1 to me. PPs come in a range of colors and often don't have a lot of purple in their claw until they are bigger than yours. I have a micro that has a tiny dot of lavender on his BP. It will get more prominent with each molt.
#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.
#2 rule of crabbing - see above

phew! I was not prepared to have two different species!

I love the little ones. we have two about this size, though, bob is the smallest. then we have one that was bordering on teeny, but after one molt is well into small and has been shell shopping medium shells. then we just took in to decent size mediums. hence the tank upgrade. I'll post tank pics soon.

haha, I am sad at how quickly daddy, our small crab, has grown. (our son named them- obviously) I wish they would stay little forever- kind of like how I wish my four year old would be four forever!
