Can all size crabs go in the same tank?

Post by AgentK25 » Tue Sep 04, 2018 6:25 pm

I have two main tanks now, a 65 and a 150. Right now I have my jumbo guys in the 150 and my five smalls in the 65. I adopted three newbies this weekend (2 med and one borderline large) and am trying to decide what size/kind of crabs would cohabitate best together. I need suggestions as the noobs are ready to move into the big tanks. :D Is there a rule of thumb? Should I separate my species even if that means a giant jumbo and a small PP in the same huge tank?

I think they can, many including myself have done it. :) In fact, Im not only speaking for myself, but also other members who have said similar, in lot of the cases, aggression is usually with crabs of a similar size, which tend to share the same resources - notably shells, which is the stem to a lot of fights IMO.

Thank you for the input! So would it be best to separate by species, then? Or does that matter much, as long as I have crabitat conditions suitable for everyone?

Or should I sort by personality?? Laid back and shy vs active and unafraid?

I would separate my species if it was me. Or at least ensure everyone has a species buddy in their tanks.

The original reply was inaccurate, and so I have edited it and replaced it with this message. (Can’t figure out how to just plain delete) Apologies to all

Here is a link to the HCA guide to tank size, crab size, and how many you can have:

These are not HCA tank size guidelines.

Thanks for all the input! My original question was whether or not I could put small crabs in with my jumbos, and how I should organize my tanks crab-size wise...basically, who will get along the best. However, since I posted the question, I've had a large, a medium and a small PP in with my jumbo PPs and they are getting along famously. :) They are in my 150g, so no worries on being overcrowded. lol I do appreciate the HCA guidelines on crabs to tank space ratios...SUPER HELPFUL!

Yeah, they are. They just copied our HCA image and wrote it all out.

I see what happened. When I was scrolling I read it as teeny 5 gallons each, small 10 gallons each, etc.

I apologize for misreading HermitCrabHelp!

You have nothing to apologize for. I misread your post and was absolutely in the wrong. I should have paid more attention.
