Sea sponge sterilization?

Post by abesze » Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:29 pm

I read about how you're supposed to sterilize sea sponges after they've been used, does the same go for brand new sponges? Or is it enough to rinse them in dechlor water before they go in the tank?

No one recommends sponges. They harbour bacteria.

Do they still harbor bacteria if they're dry? Because I was thinking of putting some in their hammock dry

They should be fine in the hammock. Some people offer bits of sponge as snacks. It’s when they’re in sitting water that they become iffy.

Ok thanks! Is it ok to put them in the tank straight from the package or should I microwave them(can you microwave them if they're dry or will they burn?)

I like to give mine a quick wash and then add to the tank. If you do want to nuke it on the microwave, keep it dry. Any small amount of moisture, it will stink up - baseball sized sponge will shrink to the size of a peanut if wet in the microwave.

I have a few that I use as decor around the tank, I boiled them gently before using, and have done it a few times since to clean them. They can crinkle a little from the heat.
