New to HCs-is this mold and is it ok?

Post by Amb1419 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:55 am

There is what I believe to be mold growing on the log, it’s green on some parts and fuzzy on other. Can someone tell me is this is ok? Or should I replace it/clean it? We are new hermit crabs and trying our best to make a suitable home for our new friends Image

It is mold. It won't hurt the crabs but if you have sensitivities it can cause you problems!

You can combat mold with salt - boil the wood in a heavy amount of salted water and allow to dry fully. You don't have to use Instant Ocean, you can use any cooking salt without additives, like kosher salt. I do several cups of salt per pot when boiling wood for the crabs and haven't had an issue with mold since.
