Smallest ultratherm

Post by Hermiesguardian » Tue Nov 12, 2019 9:00 pm

I'm giving my 10 gallon tank to a friend that just purchased 3 crabs on vacation. I'm also giving her some other extra supplies I have. Once there are 6 inches of substrate, it leaves 4 inches of empty space. That gives the dimensions 4"×19" for a heater. There are no ultratherms close to that size. What would you recommend to do for a heater?

Bean Farm has a 6x17. With only having 4" to heat I'm wondering if the 6x17 could be too much for such a small area. Especially considering warm air rises. Sorry if I made it more complicated. Just thinking out loud on here.

Thanks. I didn't think about it being too hot, just too big. So would she be stuck with a store bought Zoomed?

I used an 11x11 Flukers UTH (same design as an Ultratherm) on the back of my 10 and it got it to 82 degrees, but I keep my room chilly in winter.

Ok. Thanks. I assume you covered the entire back including the substrate.

Yes. It was the only way to keep the heat up and steady.

Did the sub dry out? I remember having trouble keeping it warm but I used Zoomed.

I've always covered the back of my tanks fully, so managing it with a little extra water in the back didn't even register as being a problem. Once every month or two I had to pour a cup of warm along the back edge to keep things at the right consistency, but I also have the tanks sealed up pretty well.
