Calico box crab

Post by Orin » Sat Nov 04, 2017 3:25 pm

I got this sweetheart the other day. I remember seeing these at the pet shops in the 80's and early 90's but then never again. Anybody have any interesting experiences with this species?

I have seen them for sale through online specialty sites, and I have always been intrigued. I haven't had one yet though, so I hope you do share your experiences with us on the Forum.

120G with 5 hermit crabs, varied ages/sizes, most are jumbo by this point.
I have a bunch of other critters, too! You can see them all here:

I bought a male and female. I started with a 38L, an air-powered sponge filter, and a specific gravity of 1.020. They are very docile and very strong. They like processed fish and thawed shrimp. I haven't tried baby clams (from a can) yet.

I'd love photos of the setup, when you have the chance.

My setup is rather utilitarian (as described) at this point. I know this species does not escape readily but the sponge filter prevents avenues for escape a side or skimmer filter would provide.
