|

we get water pumped from a well, no chlorine. Is it safe for hermit crabs?
I got a fogger so I could get smaller water dishes but keep humidity ( couldn't afford auto mister). I only turn it on for short periods of time and it keeps humidity for awhile. But my hermit crabs run for higher ground when I turn it on . are they just scared cause they cant see? or can they not breath? I use purified water.
Whats wrong |

As I understand, it depends on what is in your water as far as possible contaminants, but if it is safe for you to drink, it should be ok for the hermies (as far as bacteria etc. are concerned).
I have used our well water straight, without any treatments for my 75 g fish tank, my water dragon and the hermies for years, without any problems. Actually, I think well water is probably better than any city water... |

Our water is well water and I testd it in high-school environmental science class. He was very concerned we were drinking it, which we weren't. XD we live in the middle of an apple orchard and near a dump, but not reaaaaalllly near You might be able to find someone who will test your water and send you results. I mean unless you already dont drink it. _________________ -O.M.

Yeah, well water can be pretty nasty, even if it's been cleared by the health department. I studied Environmental Sciences for a while in college, and the things I learned from one of the professor's well-water studies had me stop eating at some of the rural eateries. Not only that, but there are things that are considered safe for humans to consume in low quantities that would not be okay for invertebrates at any level. (Pesticide run-off, copper, etc.) If you've had a full water test done recently on your well-water and there aren't levels of anything present, it'll be safe! _________________ Proud mama to 33 cats, 1 tubby hammie, 3 betta, 1 gourami, 3 clown pleco, and my 13 kuhli loaches!

Guess I am just lucky as far as our water is concerned. We live a little further out and, luckily, don't have any dumps near us...
Also, I didn't think about the copper, which might present a problem in older homes that still have copper pipes. Ours is newer and has PVC pipes, so no issue there. But that is definitely something to consider.
I agree with the others, you should have your water tested before you use it. |
