Micro Hermit Crabs

Post by IMS08 » Wed Nov 26, 2014 10:00 pm

Hello! Not sure if this is the right place, but couldn't think of a different place to post.

I have been wanting a micro hermit crab for a while now. Not sure where I would be able to get one though. Breeding is out of the question, I don't have the time or equipment. I would really like one but don't know where to find them.

I could care for them in a 10 gallon tank and eventually a 29 gallon, I just don't know where to get one. If anyone has ideas, please share. I am fine if there isn't an option but am very interested.

My petsmart and Petco both have tiny ones. You just have to call and find out when they get new crabs in. Call those days and ask. If they have teeny ones you can go check them out. My Petco today had a dozen or so micros.

Beware, they will not remain micro for long. However, they seem to adapt better to captivity better than their larger relatives, but should be offered a tonne of space due to how quickly they grow.

They adapt better most likely because they are probably younger.

If you put a micro in with a large, wouldn't they get squished?

Most crabs of different sizes get along just fine. It's more common for crabs of similar sizes to have problems. I've never had a micro but I've had teeny all the up to jumbo together. The big guys are usually pretty tolerant of the little ones. Even if they were accidentally trampled they could just tuck in their shell.

That's great! I'm trying to get species buddies for my large but I thought a smaller size would be an easier adjustment on him with roomies.

Do smaller crabs like small-micro-teenies have a higher mortality rate? Or was that just bad luck on my end? I feel like anything below a small/medium seems to be really susceptible to pps.
