Coenobita Rugosus

Housing

Same as other types of Hermit Crabs

In Tank Setup

They like to climb and explore,so there should be climbing branches, vines and/or plants in the set-up.

Heat and Humidity

They are more active when my tank is in the 75-78 range. Humidity in the same range.

Substrate

I have both mostly playsand, with a Forest Bedding type area in my tank. I have seen them go near and explore the Forest Bedding, and yet they dig in the sandy area.

Water

I keep both a large fresh and salt water dish, deep enough for them to take a dip in. The Rugs dont seem to care one way or another about their baths. However they love their time in the playpen exploring all the toys and shells that I keep as extras for swapping in and out of the tank. They seem to play more with their tank mates after a bath.

Diet

No real dietary differences or preferences.

Molting

I have had 3 molts from my Rugosus. Two healthy Rugosus molted without proble. One disabled one had a terminal molt. I believe that the effort to regrow limbs was too stressful .

From what I have observed of my Ruggies. They are not as active as my other crabs(with the exception of my lone Cavipe),and prefer to lounge around up on a vine or branch,or nap contentedly in the cocohut. They get along well with the other crab species in the crabitat. They are not that interested in being handled ,and are fairly shy about it.
