I'm still maintaining conditions. As far as I can tell, there has been no movement. There is a mild smell, but normal for the food I put in the tank and not anything I'd call unpleasant. So I'm still waiting, tho I feel pretty sure she has passed :(

Re: Molting Paralysis/Dead Hermit Crab

Yeah, she looks like she is dead. So sorry you had to go through this, but it is a common part of hermit crab ownership. There really isn't anything you could have dinner to save her. I have tried both hands off and nursing, and neither made a difference. One thing I do differently now is buy small...

Re: Molting Paralysis/Dead Hermit Crab

UPDATE: Per more frantic forum reading, I got worried about her butt drying out so I spooned a little bit of dechlor water on there (had to lift the hide off of her temporarily, but the light I'm using is a night (red) bulb. I'm hoping these links work, posting this way instead of as attachments bec...

Molting Paralysis/Dead Hermit Crab

It's a little difficult to fill out the form (below) because the crab in question is now in an ISO. Most questions reflect the ISO conditions, but I've attempted to note any deviations where I feel it's relevant to know the situation she was previously in. If anything is unclear let me know. My herm...

Re: molting/destressing crab-possible tank transfer

Normally it will take a week or two however they normally stay under for a lot longer just to chill out. :) It is also worth mentioning just to leave her be and try to limit the peeks as it just stresses her out further as I noticed that you said: Also, you don't want to mist a moulting crab as I h...

Re: molting/destressing crab-possible tank transfer

From what you're describing it sounds like she molted on the surface and not underground. It is important that you do not move her until she has hardened and eaten most of her exo. The molting process is far from over, if you move her back with the other crabs too soon she will not be able to defen...

Re: molting/destressing crab-possible tank transfer

Thanks again for reassuring me that she would be best off staying in the tank, everybody. I just peaked in at her and she is molted, sitting next to her exo in her shell. She looks so pale! Her feeler thingies are moving so I'm guessing she is fine and hopefully I didn't scare her too much! I'm so g...

Re: molting/destressing crab-possible tank transfer

Alright, thank you guys! I'll just leave her and as soon as she comes up I'll set it up properly for future iso. Do you guys just put the substrate in and then rehydrate it when the time comes you need to ISO a crab? Or have sand and EE on hand but wait to set up til needed?

Re: molting/destressing crab-possible tank transfer

I braved moving the mat, so it's above the substrate on the side of the tank she's on. It's a pretty small, crappy zoo med one. :) Thanks! Should I just offer tiny amounts of dry food that lasts a bit until I see her come up? I don't want to keep letting food go bad in there, but I also want her to ...

molting/destressing crab-possible tank transfer

I'm posting with some follow up questions to a post here (http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=102624), where you can go if you want to see my responses to the emergency questions. Otherwise. Short version: Should I move a crab that is not fully buried and doesn't seem to be a...

Re: Molting near heater and substrate issues

Ah I see. The reason I have seen her shell is that she is in shallow substrate under a log. I didn't know how deep it needed to be when I set it up. She's pretty cozy in there, the log acts as the top of her little cave.

Re: Molting near heater and substrate issues

Oh! I thought maybe she could be molting in her shell. Or waiting to molt? Not clear on why her being on her shell means she isn't molting, though I appreciate the advice. 1 month seems like too long to be distressing from what I've read. I've moved her tankmate to another tank I set up so she is on...

Kijiji is Canadian or something [emoji29] Don't bury any crab, ever. Can you put a hide over her? You can just put a plastic cup over her if needed. Can we double check your conditions? Answer all the Help Request Template questions and we can get the whole picture at one time [emoji6] http://www.h...

Re: Molting near heater and substrate issues

Crabs bury because they need to be in a safe and dark place to molt, not because they need to be warm. Relocate the UTH asap. You can sprinkle handfuls of sub at a time until you're deepened up. Rushing to set up a dup CAN get expensive. Sprinkle first, then see if you can catch something on Craigs...

Molting near heater and substrate issues

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is an emergency, but since it may be... Almost a month ago, I adopted two hermit crabs (a small E and a medium PP) that had been used for a simple experiment at my former college and needed homes. I am new to crab care, and tried to set up their home as best I could with...
