Are you on Facebook? We're mostly US and Canadian crabbers here and while basic crab care is the same for all species, for help with the right products and where to get supplies you should check out The Australian Land Hermit Care Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/AussieCrabCare/ (The Krabooz ...

Re: Molt Issues - I need advice fast!
Don't go off what i think, because i'm not there. Always trust your own crabbing instincts. Do you think she is in danger? She needs sandcastle consistency sand, darkness, space, peace. Soggy sand takes some of that away and is considered a dangerous molting ground (think quicksand). If you decide ...

Re: Molt Issues - I need advice fast!
Ok! Thanks for the answers. The pictures are also a great help! Substrate: baking sub is a good way to sterilize it. It is not necessary to frequently sterilize your sand. Beneficial bacteria lives through your substrate which helps break down waste and organic material, keeping the tank balanced a...

Re: Molt Issues - I need advice fast!
1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Sand, and yes it is coloured. It has been baked, and as per another users advice I have changed to a new brand (which is what was used in the ISO tank). The new sand is play sand for kids which was also baked. But I literally only bo...

Molt Issues - I need advice fast!
Hi All, Having a slight issue with one of my crabs. I had one that went into a molt but didn't seem comfortable so I moved him and he has completed a full surface molt in an ISO (he had 3 inches sand but still went for a partial surface molt inside his hut for the molt) - still happy and healthy. Wh...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
Excellent advice, thank you! I did come across the safe and jostle food lists on Friday and had a shopping spree for them on Saturday as a result. Fed them my first home-made meal of pumpkin seed, linseed, cuttlefish bone, and krill that night. Krill was nearly gone by the morning and morbo was sitt...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
That sand from bunnings is probably a safer option. Can I bake that sand too? OK then, if they can easily get the water into their shells they should be fine. :) However that sand... Personally I wouldn't trust it, most things catered to hermit crabs are more of a negative factor than a positive. I ...

Re: What is a moss pit?
I have this in my tank. It's really good, the crabs seem to have taken well to it! :) As another aussie hermit crab owner, I do think that this type of moss that howche listed is a really good choice. another option is to looking in Masters and see the loose moss they have for sale. Off memory it co...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
Hey all, I was a bit iffy about the tree too. It won't last long but I'll keep it for now until I can find a good replacement. Keeping an eye to make sure it does not get moldy either. hermieluv1 - thanks for the feeding tips and tank set up tips! Will look into those! aussieJJDude - the dishes are ...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
Hey Rebecca, Thanks for all your help! I actually did end up buying a brand new tank. There is a new craze here about a brand called Krabooz and they have set up a whole new "adopt a hermit crab" thing and provide a few good things. Unfortunately they do promote painted shells though and as a result...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
I ended up getting this: http://www.bunnings.com.au/propagation-brunnings-150g-sphagnum-moss-block-31582_p3010215 after I saw someone else use it on another forum page - http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=99663&p=942216#p942216 Thanks for the advice. Re: What is a moss pit?
Hey hey, just trying to buy moss in Sydney at the moment and came across the below product at bunnings. Just wanted to know how this product is still going for you or if you found something better? Cheers Moss pits are used to increase/maintain humidity levels. Hiawatha or Sphagnum (not Sphagnum pit...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Sand, and it's about 2inches deep. Hedo successfully melted in that before. But as per your advice, I can definitely try and make it three inches. Anymore than that, and they will escape my tank because my other crab hut is taller, b...

Re: Emergency - Hermit Crab not moving but not dead?
I actually meant 30 degrees celsius which another post below confirmed is 80 degrees Fahrenheit. So that's okay then :) 80% humidity noted! Will make sure I stick to that! As posted above, Hedos' abdomen now looks like its dried out. This means he is probably gone, right? I will have to do a full ta...
