Salty Residue on tank walls?

I had been using a single air stone/bubbler in combination with regular spraying with a hand mister. I had some issues with flooding, so I need to ease up oin the misting. I added a second air stone/bubbler, this time to the other pool, which of course is salt water. Now, I am getting a salty, crust...

To transport or leave behind?

First I want to say thanks to everyone here for their help as we set up our classroom crabitat. The crabs seem happy and healthy, and I think one may even be trying to molt, as I haven't seen it for several weeks, so that is hopefully a good sign. I am asking for your help and advice as we come up o...

Re: Classroom CrabCam

Due to bandwidth and confidentiality concerns, I am only broadcasting after my kids leave. Viewing times will be around 3:00 CST to 9:00 CST. I may mess around with recordings, so you can see older footage anytime.

Re: Classroom CrabCam

From 9:00 Central Standard Time to the morning hours, the lights are off. It's not a problem with the stream, it's just really dark in there. ;)

Classroom CrabCam

Thanks to everyone here at the HCA, our classroom crabitat seems to be working out very well. The kids and I have really enjoyed learning about hermit crabs and their very unique qualities! Unfortunately, as you all know, the hermit crabs don't do much of anything during the day. I wanted some way f...

Re: A classful of soon-to-be new hermit crab owners

Wonderful news this afternoon! I got the bubble pool going, and sealed all but a couple inches of the screen cover with duct tape. Now, my temps are in the high 70s and the humidity is over 80% for the first time ever! I may be able to get by without an Ultratherm at all. It feels like a tropical pa...

Re: A classful of soon-to-be new hermit crab owners

I got a call from the custodian yesterday. One of the crabs had died over the weekend. She told me the temps were around 70, but the humidity was at 50%. I came in this morning, and I saw the dead crab, out of its shell, near the food dish. The shell was in the salt water bowl. Two legs were just ou...

Re: A classful of soon-to-be new hermit crab owners

Thanks all for the advice. I am wondering if the room gets very cool overnight. I arrive every morning and the thermostat is set to a toasty 72 degrees, but who knows how low it gets in the wee hours? Some good news: I made arrangements with the custodian, who will be working Fri/Mon/Tue when school...

Re: A classful of soon-to-be new hermit crab owners

Well, yesterday morning, I came in and the "Big Guy", much bigger than the five other PPs, had lost a leg. I have had trouble getting the temps to stay above 72 degrees, and so after school I went to the petstore and got a larger UTH to put on the back of our 20 gallon tank. WIth this second UTH alo...

A classful of soon-to-be new hermit crab owners

Hello! I am a teacher of gifted kids in Missouri. We voted and decided on hermit crabs as a class pet, and I was thrilled! I had some as a kid and I loved them. We used this site extensively for researching, and the kids helped me make a shopping list. Our order is going out and all the stuff for th...
