Re: There is a spider in my crabitat
I would hate to have a spider nd would probably hope for my crabs to eat it as I am petrified of spiders :( About 6 months ago, I would have said the same thing. I dumped leaves into my tortoise enclosure which, I would guess, had a few tiny spiders in it. The few tiny spiders turned into a whole l...

Re: Monkey grass
It's on the "do not feed" list for tortoises. Reason: high in saponins. No idea if it affects hermit crabs, though.

Have you had a second sniffer's opinion? I'll be looking forward to reading future threads about Big Enzo and Felix's resurfacing act. If not, my hugs and shoulder are at your disposal. Happy alive crabs trump tears and hugs, so I'm sending you guys my best wishes.

Re: Clippings
I do know what you mean about gardening in AZ. Is it actually legal to have a patch of green there (joking)? I lived in Vegas for a while and I think it was discouraged to have a lawn in the backyard. I think you got taxed heavily for using too much water on stuff that wasn't important. And thank yo...

Re: Clippings
@landlubber: you're safe on all three. Clippings are fine. I'm far from master gardener status (but wish I was) but I've spent some time growing reptile safe plants.. if you need any help, I might know the answer :) Here's a link to a decent plant site: http://m.thetortoisetable.org.uk/m/tortoise_ho...

Re: Anyone know safety of these unlisted plants?
Pilea and Tradescantia should be non-toxic. There are always exceptions but I know for a fact that tradescantia zebrina aka wandering jew hasn't given me any problems with tortoises. It's an easy plant to grow and propagate. I've also grown a type of aeschynanthus (aeschynanthus radicans aka lipstic...

Re: Molt gone wrong. Stabilized, but would like advice.
You haven't discouraged me in the least! I've slowly been building up my supplies. I'm working on a "custom built" enclosure as we speak, but money has always been tight and I have to pace myself. I'm hoping to make a large enough enclosure that's beautiful and practical but it'll take time. Meanwhi...

Re: PVC pipe safe?
I recently asked this question and found out that it's safe so long as no heat is applied to it. I think heat causes the pvc to release toxic fumes, but not quite sure. Now I'm wondering if it's safe to put against the glass next to a UTH.

Re: How many watts are ideal for my hermit crab tank.
What type of heat lamp are you going to use? Day/night bulbs, incandescents, or a ceramic heat emitter? How large is the tank? I don't own hermit crabs, but the only advice I can give is to get a high wattage ceramic heat emitter and couple that with a thermostat. You can always reuse a higher watt ...
