Re: New Digs!
Totally understand... not to worry! The humidifier blows in through a hole I cut in the glass. Variable moisture settings - stays right around 72%! No climbing yet - except for the pothos they can't climb the glass - I'll move that plant more strategically. If I have to resort to a lid I will... Wat...
Re: New Digs!
Thanks! I'm trying without a cover for now... like the look. I built it to accommodate a standard cover though. They do climb! My last tank was unique and ended up with a broken piece that allowed one to figure out how to get out and onto the hardwood, but it's a closed space so he couldn't go anywh...
New Digs!
Recently realized that my thriving crabs had outgrown their crabitat and needed an upgrade. Just finished the new penthouse! 45 gal space, better substrate control, better positioned humidity control and now with both night heat and day uvb bulbs, and a second live (crab-safe) plant, both of which s...

Re: Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat..
I appreciate the comments. This particular bottle is providing over six inches of substrate and 55 more square inches of surface area than their old tank. The unit holds 15 gallons - Isn't the rule of thumb 5 gallons per crab? Temps and humidity are more easily consistent too. It's definitely an imp...

New crabitat working great!
Just moved my three buddies into this modified 15-gallon demijohn bottle. It was quite a little diy project but really working out well. Crabitat conditions are more consistent, crabs are more active... better and deeper substrate. They love it. Pretty happy with the outcome. :) Next up... live plan...

Re: Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat..
Well we did it! We successfully converted a 15-gallon demijohn bottle into a crabitat for three crabs! Thanks to everyone for the help. This tank is working splendidly! The crabs love it and have been far more active than the old setup. Lots more substrate to dig and tunnel, more room to move around...

Re: Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat..
Thanks... Yea... I may try for the top lamp first. Bottle is due by currier today. Going to take some rigging to get it right. Challenge accepted! I'll post a pic back here if it's successful...

Re: Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat..
Thanks everyone for your care and concern. So here's my plan (see link below for a visual). First, I am going to set up the 15-gal bottle tank and monitor conditions before placing the hermits into it. Only upon successful crabitat conditions pre-transfer will I risk it. After reading in other place...

Thanks everyone for the comments. I think I will indeed give this a try! I'll post a pic once I get it set up. Really appreciated!

Re: Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat..
Thanks for jumping in... as far as space considerations for growth, the 15-gal bottle is pretty big and unless I''m mistaken, would be an improvement over the current tank. Surface area of the current tank provides 200 square inches at the substrate surface, and about 3" of substrate depth. The bott...

Re: Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat..
Thanks for replying! The terarium idea has crossed my mind, but I don't want to let go of the crabitat use yet. The current rectangular tank setup has substrate separated by large, flat stones stacked on top of each other - at the surface they show as just flush with the surrounding substrate on eit...

Help! Heating ideas for 15-gallon glass bottle habitat...
Howdy... considering creating a crabitat out of a very large 15-gallon glass demijohn bottle (see pic) where substrate would be filled to the units widest point, and separated by stones between sand on one side and coconut soil on the other. Current crabs are in similar setup but in a traditional 10...
