HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hello! I’m adopting two small hermits (PPs) that I found on Facebook marketplace. From the pictures, it looks like they haven’t been living in an ideal habitat. There’s no thermometer or hydrometer and the substrate is very shallow and only sand. The owner is selling me the crabs with their habitat....

Towels on top of the mesh lid will absorb the moisture rather than keeping it in the tank. You want something non porous on the lid. Try wrapping your entire lid in saran wrap. That should keep the humidity in. [emoji846]

Just leave her alone in the best conditions you can provide and see what happens. You say she buried herself, but it sounded like there was not substrate in the tank you had her in, just wet paper towels? She might need to molt if she sustained an injury, so if you have moist substrate in there now...

Thank you guys! I didn’t see any mites on the crabs, just in and around the food dish so Im pretty sure it’s just food mites then!

I was gone on vacation and had a bunch of what i think are food mites appear. I know they’re harmless, but they gross me out lol. Will getting isopods curb the population? Also, can I catch wild ones in my backyard or should I order them instead? And where’s the best place to buy some? Thanks!
