Update on this: for others asking the same question.
Unfortunately the hermit crab involved in this passed away, I believe Curlysister was correct in saying that the cave likely collapsed. I will make sure to exercise greater caution in the future if I experience something similar.

Re: Help! Species ID needed
Definately not purple pinchers. My gut instinct is Lila. That you got them randomly and for the same price as PPs would be extremely surprising. It would be more likely that they'd be either Ruggies (but that's a huge crab) or Violas (but the eyes don't quite match), so I do doubt it's either of th...

Help! Species ID needed
I work at a small, family owned pet store. We received these hermit crabs from a new wholesaler labeled as “Caribbean hermit crabs XL”, but they don’t looks anything like our normal purple pinchers, especially the eye shape. The closest looking species I’ve found so far are the Tawny hermit crabs. D...

After molting, how long does it take for the exoskeleton to solidify?
Title is pretty self explanatory, but around a week ago I moved all my crabs to their new tank except for one. I was digging around in their old tank (I needed to use their old substrate as it had lots of springtails and isopods) and found BigCrab molting and had just shed his exoskeleton. I placed ...

Hermit crab fully submerged in water?
I checked on my crabs before bed and noticed Minicrab in the freshwater pool, and she seemed to be pacing around in an almost frantic manner. What could this mean? I’m not certain of the tank conditions, I know the humidity might be a bit low because I don’t have half of the screen lid covered. I ke...

Re: Cohabitation? Hermit crabs + Taiwan Yellow Land crab
I see two possible issues after googling a bit on on this species. Molting. There's some posts saying Taiwanese crabs do dig, which can cause issues with hermits who are stuck in one place for a few weeks while they molt. I'm not seeing anything on how the Taiwan crabs molt with a quick search, but...

Cohabitation? Hermit crabs + Taiwan Yellow Land crab
Hello! New member here, but experienced hermit crab owner. I work at a small family owned pet store, and we have a Taiwan yellow land crab. She’s been here for about 5 months, and I’ve come to fall in love with her extremely sassy personality. Now, I’m setting up a 4x2x18 75gal enclosure for my herm...
