splittng 5 crabs between two tanks

Re: Newbie to Hermit Crab Care — Want to Double Check
I would change their food and water, but for the substrate make sure they are all above ground before adding more. The lid/saran wrap you can do whenever because you dont really need to disturb the crabs much

Re: Newbie to Hermit Crab Care — Want to Double Check
How deep is the substrate? It should be 2-3 times as deep as your largest crab. Also the humidifty should be above 80% if you are struggling to meet that, i would cover the lid with saran wrap temporarily and then later get a plexiglass ir glass lid to help retain moisture. The temp should be fine b...

Re: Helping my kids with a first pet
so I found my notebook with hermit crab care pages(a few years ago I made a book with tons of hermit crab breeds and facts) and here are some things that marine crabs need -they are usually submerged most of their time unless they are scavenging on land -their tank water must be filtered and cycled ...

Re: Helping my kids with a first pet
i wanted to adopt marine crabs a while ago, but it became too difficult to find the correct supplies. sounds like they are doing well! they do need substrate on the bottom like sand or crushed coral so they can bury themselves. I would also put some food underwater for them to scavenge for, but take...

Re: I am a new crab owner and have a few questions.
you can feed them honey, I have never had any problems with it. I just put a bit in a bottle cap and get it the next day. Unfortunately you cannot paint their shells as most paint is toxic and could stress/kill your crabs. Glad you are doing research before adopting, if you have any questions I woul...

Re: Helping my kids with a first pet
that sounds great!, however, what do you mean by "one drowned already"? was it dead in the water dish?? also sponges can be home to bacteria and stuff that might not be good for your hermit crabs, so if you are going to add the sponges I would think about replacing/ thoroughly washing every month or...

Re: Molting
I usually just refill them without taking the bowls out of the tank when one of mine is molting, then when they come up I change all of the water.

Re: Helping my kids with a first pet
for the water bowl, make sure the sides of it are free of sand and dirt because that can absorb the water and flood the tank(that happened to me once, be careful!) hermit crabs don't drink that fast, so that is the only thing I can think of. I usually giver my hermit crabs fresh fruit, veggies, and ...

Re: Question about maintaining humidity
I would suggest adding plastic wrap to the top over the mesh, it helped me a lot until I replaced it with plexiglass.

Re: 3 New HM, 2 MIA for a month, 1 inactive but alive
new hermit crabs can be very stressed for while after coming to your tank, and unless the tank smells like rotting fish, don't worry about dead crabs. the smell is pretty strong so you would definitely be able to smell it. I would add more shells around the size your current crabs are. be patient wi...
